As of Aug 9, 2026, the average hourly pay for seasonal structural welder in the United States is $24.39, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $20.67 and $27.16 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a seasonal structural welder?

Seasonal structural welders are skilled tradespeople who are hired on a temporary, often project-based basis to weld and assemble metal structures such as buildings, bridges, or industrial frameworks. Their work is typically tied to peak construction seasons or specific projects that require additional workforce for a limited time. These welders must possess strong technical skills, knowledge of welding safety protocols, and the ability to work in various weather conditions. Seasonal positions are common in regions with fluctuating construction activity due to weather or economic cycles. While the job is temporary, it can lead to recurring opportunities or full-time employment for experienced workers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a seasonal structural welder, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Seasonal Structural Welder, you need proficiency in welding techniques (such as MIG, TIG, and stick welding), blueprint reading, and a high school diploma or welding certification. Familiarity with welding equipment, safety protocols, and common construction materials is essential, and certifications like AWS (American Welding Society) are highly valued. Attention to detail, strong work ethic, and adaptability to changing work environments are important soft skills for this position. These skills and qualities are crucial for producing safe, high-quality welds and efficiently meeting project deadlines in often demanding conditions.

What are some common challenges faced by seasonal structural welders, and how can they prepare for them?

Seasonal Structural Welders often work in demanding outdoor environments, which can mean exposure to extreme weather and variable work hours. Adapting quickly to different worksites and collaborating with new team members each season is essential. Staying up-to-date on safety protocols and maintaining physical fitness can help welders manage these challenges effectively. Additionally, strong communication skills and flexibility are key to integrating smoothly into project-specific teams and meeting tight deadlines.

Job description

Job Title: Lead Welder

Location: Huntingdon, PA

Schedule: Monday-Friday

Job Summary

D.C. Goodman & Sons' work spans fabrication, structural steel, commercial mechanical/piping systems, and fire protection installs. We're hiring a Lead Welder to handle both shop fabrication and field welding on commercial/industrial job sites — including hospitals, colleges, and industrial facilities. This is a hands-on leadership role for an experienced welder ready to guide a crew while continuing to work in the field and shop.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform structural and pipe welding using stick (SMAW), TIG (GTAW), and MIG (GMAW) processes as the job requires
  • Fabricate steel components in the shop and erect/weld structural steel on job sites
  • Read blueprints and fabrication drawings to lay out cuts, drill holes, and fit pieces precisely before welding
  • Inspect welds for quality, penetration, and code compliance; correct substandard work
  • Lead a crew of welders/fabricators — assigning tasks, setting pace, and ensuring work meets spec and schedule
  • Train and mentor less experienced welders and apprentices on technique, safety, and drawing interpretation
  • Coordinate with foremen and project managers on job sequencing, especially on multi-trade sites
  • Enforce welding-specific safety practices (fire watch, ventilation, PPE, hot work permits)
  • Maintain and troubleshoot welding equipment, flagging service/replacement needs

Qualifications

Required:

  • 7-10+ years welding experience, spanning both structural/commercial fabrication and pipe welding
  • 2-3+ years of crew leadership, training, or mentoring experience
  • Proficiency in stick (SMAW), TIG (GTAW), and MIG (GMAW) welding
  • Experience reading structural drawings and fitting/aligning steel members
  • Precision fabrication skills (exact cuts, accurate hole drilling, tight-tolerance fit-up)
  • Comfort welding in varied conditions (outdoor, overhead, tight spaces, seasonal weather)
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30
  • Valid driver's license

Preferred:

  • Documented qualification across SMAW, GTAW, and GMAW processes
  • Hot work / fire watch safety training
  • Willingness to complete or maintain welder qualification testing per AWS/ASME codes
