Job description

Atmosphere Services is seeking an Atmosphere Technician to support submarine construction programs and ensure compliance with state and federal regulatory requirements. This role is part of the Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) organization and plays a key role in protecting the health and safety of shipyard employees during daily work.

Position Overview
The selected individual will receive training to become an OSHA Shipyard Competent Person, which includes classroom instruction and hands-on training in atmospheric testing aboard submarines and throughout the facility. Additional training will be provided to perform environmental readings and additional safety functions to support safety and quality assurance in submarine construction.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform atmospheric inspections of tanks, confined spaces, and shipboard locations to ensure safety.
  • Set up safety instructions and issue shipboard fire permits.
  • Use testing instruments to determine safe working conditions, including ventilation, fire safety, respiratory protection, and related requirements.
  • Conduct environmental readings and support EHS compliance efforts.
  • Work in physically demanding environments, including carrying sampling equipment, climbing ladders and stairs, entering confined/enclosed spaces, and working at heights in all weather conditions.

Required Physical Capabilities

  • Ability to carry sampling equipment throughout the shipyard.
  • Ability to enter confined and enclosed spaces.
  • Ability to climb ladders and stairs and work at heights.
  • Ability to work outside in all seasonal conditions.

Required:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum of 1 year experience in shipyard, manufacturing work or environmental health and safety experience

Preferred:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree or higher in engineering, safety or related discipline
  • Familiarity with shipyard safety along with knowledge of OSHA requirements relating to atmospheric safety of tanks and confined spaces
  • Knowledge of fire safety and hazardous material management
