Job description

The Role

The Seasonal Performance Ambassador is a part-time, summer role for customer service-oriented actors interested in bringing science to life! You will rehearse and perform scripted material in costume for the Power of Poisons exhibit at Liberty Science Center, engaging guests of all ages, with a heavy focus on children 3-13. When not performing, you will assist frontline staff with end-to-end guest care, crowd management, presenting LSC offerings, and overseeing the safety of public spaces..

Seasonal Performance Ambassadors report to the Guest Engagement management team and are expected to be engaged participants in the broader LSC work community.

What You’ll Do
Below is an overview of your essential functions. Please note this is not an exhaustive list as new responsibilities can be added as business needs demand.


Key Responsibilities

  • Perform scripted material in costume, facilitating diverse audience participation and engaging guests with science topics

  • Provide high-quality customer service, including ticketing assistance, resolving guest concerns, and presenting accurate knowledge of LSC offerings

  • Manage large crowds and queues efficiently and oversee the condition and safety of all public areas

  • Arrive on time for all scheduled performances, having all props and set pieces in place prior to each show

Demonstrate Professionalism, Reliability, and Mentorship

  • Represent the LSC brand positively at all times by avoid participation in workplace gossip onsite and offsite, treating your colleagues with respect at all time, and being well groomed

  • Contribute to a positive team-based workplace culture that embraces and advances team goals through peer coaching and modeling

  • Follow all LSC and departmental policies and procedures

  • Follow all safety and cleanliness protocols and assist with cleaning duties when assigned

  • Assist in training new hires to the highest of service standards

  • Assist with special events and programming as needed


Preferred Qualifications & Experience

  • Theatrical, charismatic, energetic, and friendly personality with a strong customer-service focus

  • Performance abilities/acting experience and comfort with public speaking and audience facilitation

  • Demonstrated initiative, strong judgment, and creative problem-solving skills

  • Strong teaming and collaboration abilities, including strong communication and de-escalation skills

  • Ability to work in a high-energy, fast-paced, and crowded environment.

  • Minimum High School Diploma or GED


Schedule, Location, Classification, & Compensation

  • Summer position running between May and Labor Day

  • Must be available to work either Saturday through Wednesday or Thursday through Tuesday at Liberty Science Center in Jersey City, NJ

  • Compensation is $18.50 per hour and includes paid sick time and perks such as LSC Membership and discounts at the LSC store and Cosmic Cafe.

The Performance Ambassador role will require working with guests of all ages, often standing for extended periods while performing. The performance ambassador should be comfortable with large crowds, high levels of noise, and extensive public speaking. The position requires the ability to navigate LSC on concrete floors and bend/lift/stretch while in a basic costume. This role also requires the ability to work outdoors, including navigating uneven ground and being exposed to varied weather elements. The ability to lift 25 pounds is required.
