Job description

The City of Lenexa Community Development department is currently accepting applications for a seasonal Construction Inspector in our Engineering Construction division. The ideal candidate will:

Dates of Employment:

This is a seasonal position and starts as soon as possible and runs through late December. This position averages 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday.

Position Summary

Under general supervision, the seasonal Construction Inspector inspects public infrastructure construction projects, including witnessing materials testing, to determine compliance with the standards and specifications of the City. This position prepares and maintains documentation of progress on each project, measures and records each item of work for CIP projects and prepares pay estimates. Work is performed with latitude for the exercise of independent judgment with respect to the interpretation and application of standards and specifications in accordance with sound construction/engineering judgment.

Essential Functions, Duties and Responsibilities

  • Inspects the construction of public infrastructure projects to ensure contractor compliance with approved plans, details and specifications. Drives to job sites to conduct these inspections.
  • Orders and witnesses soil, asphalt and concrete testing procedures as required, and continuously monitors for compliance with City standards and specifications throughout the project.
  • Prepares detailed daily reports of all construction activities for each project being inspected.
  • Accurately measures and documents quantities of each bid item being performed daily and keeps a running total of each item. Prepares estimates for determining payment amounts due to the contractors based on these measurements.
  • Maintains up-to-date plans that reflect all changes in design and upon completion of the project and produces as built plans to maintain accurate records.
  • Reviews and analyzes architectural and/or engineering plans, specifications, standard details, engineering calculations, technical data and contract documents for inspection purposes and compliance with plans, City and KDOT specification requirements and informs the contractors/developers/designers of issues in the field during construction.
  • Communicates inspection results with the City of Lenexa traffic, stormwater, erosion control, engineers and contractors for compliance with the plans and City and KDOT specifications.
  • Maintains ACI and CIT certifications and continually learns constantly updated specifications and knowledge of industry standards.
  • Monitors utility issues and resolutions for their projects.
  • Monitors erosions control and BMP issues and resolutions for their projects.
  • Monitors traffic control and pavement marking and signing issues and resolutions.
  • Performs driveway and sidewalk construction inspections for new and removed and replaced pavement within the City of Lenexa right of way.
  • Drives City and/or personal vehicle to perform essential functions of position.

Qualifications

Minimum: High school diploma or G.E.D.; a minimum of two years of inspection/field construction experience; or equivalent experience, education and training. Must possess and maintain a valid drivers license.

Environment and Physical Factors

This position requires good physical condition including the ability to walk/climb over difficult terrain to make inspections; the ability to lift objects weighing up to 50 lbs.; visual acuity and ability to distinguish color to inspect projects; the ability to mobilize through rebar, slick and muddy conditions and other hazardous construction-related environment; the ability to work safely near large and loud equipment; and the ability to hear warning alarms and signals. This position requires the ability to work outside for extended periods in extreme weather conditions; potentially hazardous environments and elements such as lime, hot asphalt, fly ash, concrete and other hazards of active construction sites.

Compensation

Rate of pay is $25.13 to $29.14 per hour dependent on qualifications and directly related experience.
