Description
Performs a variety of basic and routine maintenance, installation, and repair duties and operates a variety of equipment supporting operations in Parks and Public Works, works independently and in a team situation, does related work as required.
This position is seasonal work and for a limited duration. Hours per week are not guaranteed.
Essential Duties
The duties listed are intended only as illustrative examples of the various types of work that may be performed by individuals in this classification. Any of the following duties may be performed. These examples are not necessarily performed by all incumbents and do not include all specific essential functions and responsibilities the incumbent may be expected to perform.
Performs basic, routine, heavy manual work maintaining park and open space areas such as playgrounds, turf areas, natural areas, shrub beds and tree care.
Performs basic, routine grounds keeping, building maintenance, graffiti removal, illegal camp cleanup, and related custodial duties.
Performs basic semi-skilled building maintenance such as painting, plumbing, carpentry, and other unskilled trade work.
Performs routine maintenance on power equipment and operates a variety of equipment as needed.
Maintains ornamental and natural resource areas by pruning, raking, fertilizing, weeding, invasive species removal, and mulching.
Maintains grassy areas by trimming and mowing, edging and fertilizing, monitors watering of fields and grounds, assists with repairs and maintenance of irrigation components and systems.
Performs custodial duties to maintain park facilities such as cleaning restrooms and picnic shelters, mopping, waxing, and buffing floors, washing windows, arranging furniture and equipment for events.
Assists with pruning and removal of trees on City streets and in park.
Assists with caring for, planting, and transplanting trees and shrubs.
Assists in setting up and taking down equipment for various park and recreation programs; prepares facilities for park and recreation program use.
Assists in the construction of new parks facilities including clearing, grading, drainage, and foundation work.
Operates as an effective member of the Public Works team with the ability to communicate both verbally and in writing in an effort to resolve problems.
Maintains current skills and knowledge in the proper and safe techniques of building and grounds maintenance functions.
Represents the City of Sweet Home by responding to the public, citizens, its employees, and others in a prompt, professional, and courteous manner while continuously maintaining a positive customer service demeanor.
Regards everyone, internal and external, as a customer and deliver the best service possible in a respectful and patient manner.
Assists other staff in the performance of their duties as assigned.
Maintains regular job attendance and adherence to working hours.
Operates a motor vehicle safely and legally.
Required Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent and two years of general maintenance work with experience in power equipment operation, or an equivalent combination and experience.
Considerable knowledge of appropriate materials, methods, tools, equipment and practices involved in the construction maintenance and repair of Public Works facilities.
Knowledge of the proper operation and maintenance of vehicles, tools and equipment, practices, methods, hazards, and safety precautions used in the maintenance and repair of parks and facilities; equipment servicing methods and techniques; general computer literacy; and general personnel and supervisory practices.
MANDATORY REQUIREMENTS: A valid State of Oregon Motor Vehicle Driver's License is required. Ability to gain a State of Oregon motor vehicle commercial driver's license (CDL) is desirable.
DESIRABLE REQUIREMENTS: Basic first aid and CPR card
Desired Qualifications
One year certificate from college or technical school. A minimum of one year work within a park preferred, or any satisfactory combination of experience and training which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the above duties.
