Job Summary:

A Landscape Laborer is responsible for performing various tasks to implement and maintain landscaping projects for residential, commercial, or municipal clients. This role involves hands-on work, including:constructing hardscape structures and features, planting, mulching, mowing, irrigation system installation, grading, watering, fertilizing, trimming, harvesting, seeding, pest control application, event preparation, and general upkeep of outdoor spaces. The laborer works under the direction of the Landscape Supervisor, adhering to project plans and safety standards while ensuring high-quality results.

Duties/ Responsibilities:

  • Clear and prepare the site by removing debris, rocks, and unwanted vegetation

  • Grade and level ground surfaces to prepare for planting or hardscaping

  • Assist in the installation of erosion control measures if required

  • Plant trees, shrubs, flowers, and other greenery according to landscape designs

  • Maintain plants by watering, pruning, and weeding

  • Apply pesticides, fertilizer, or herbicides under supervision

  • Lay sod, seed lawns, or install artificial turf as required

  • Assist with the construction and installation of walkways, patios, retaining walls, and other hardscaping elements

  • Spread gravel, mulch, or decorative stones around landscaped areas

  • Perform carpentry or masonry tasks to support amenity and hardscape installation

  • Install and repair irrigation systems, including pipes, valves, and sprinkler heads

  • Test systems for proper operation and troubleshoot issues under supervision

  • Operate and maintain landscaping tools and machinery, such as:

    • skid steers, tractors, and backhoes

    • Mowers, trimmers, and blowers

    • Tillers, edgers, and compactors

    • Small excavators or other construction equipment

  • Ensure tools are cleaned, stored properly, and in good working condition

  • Keep job sites clean, safe, and organized during and after work

  • Assist in the setup and removal of project materials and equipment

  • Transport tools, materials, and equipment to and from job sites as needed

  • Follow safety protocols and use personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times

  • Report any safety hazards, accidents, or equipment malfunctions to supervisors

  • Assist supervisors and team members with tasks as directed

  • Help measure and mark areas for installations according to design plans

  • Provide general labor support for landscaping projects

  • Operate equipment

  • Other duties as assigned


Education/Certifications/Licenses

  • Education

    • High School Diploma or GED required

  • Certifications

    • OSHA 10 or ability to obtain

  • Licenses

    • Driver’s License

    • Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is a plus

Experience

  • Experience in landscaping, groundskeeping, construction, or outdoor manual labor

  • Previous experience in the following:

    • Planting, mowing, pruning, or weeding

    • Operating basic landscaping tools (e.g., trimmers, mowers)

    • Assisting with irrigation systems or hardscape installations

    • Experience operating landscaping machinery such as skid steers, compactors, or tillers

    • Familiarity with installing and maintaining sprinkler systems

    • Experience applying fertilizers, herbicides, or pesticides

  • Familiarity with working outdoors in varying weather conditions


Required Skills/Abilities

  • Works well with others and has patience for fast-paced changes

  • Interest in learning new skills and updated practices

  • Experience constructing hardscape and softscape landscape features

  • Familiarity with proper planting, irrigation system installation, pruning, mowing, and lawn care techniques

  • Understanding of soil management, plant care, and seasonal landscaping needs

  • Ability to safely operate and maintain basic landscaping tools and heavy equipment


  • Basic knowledge of irrigation systems, including installation, augmentation, and repair

  • Ability to assist with hardscape installations, such as patios, retaining walls, shade structures, art, and pathways

  • Ability to perform heavy lifting (up to 50 lbs or more), digging, and repetitive motions

  • Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions (heat, cold, rain)

  • Skilled in handling tools and performing tasks with precision

  • Ability to move efficiently on uneven terrain and around obstacles

  • Ability to work collaboratively and proactively with supervisors and team members to complete tasks

  • Willingness to take direction and adapt to team needs

  • Clear and respectful communication skills to understand instructions and provide feedback

  • Awareness of safety protocols and ability to follow them rigorously

  • Proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) like gloves, eye protection, and helmets

  • Consistently showing up on time and ready to work

  • Ability to complete assigned tasks within set deadlines while maintaining high quality and attention to detail

  • Ability to troubleshoot minor issues, such as equipment malfunctions or unexpected challenges on-site

  • Willingness to adjust to changes in project plans or priorities

  • Ability to perform minor maintenance on landscaping tools and equipment

  • Strong work ethic and a positive attitude
