Job description

Description The Department of Parks and Recreation, Prince George's County, Program Access Department is seeking Sign Language Support Staff to provide communication access and inclusive support for children, youth, and adults participating in after-school programs, summer camps, and recreation classes at community centers throughout the county. Support staff work alongside program instructors and participants to facilitate clear communication, promote engagement, and ensure an inclusive and welcoming environment for all participants. All selected candidates must provide excellent customer service and must maintain confidentiality regarding disability, medical, and personal information.

Ideal candidates will have experience working in recreation programs, working in childcare or education programs, and supporting children or adults that are hard of hearing. Starting positions and pay rates are based on age and previous experience. Hours depend on the program.

The following opportunities are available: Sign language support I $18.50 - $22.70 Minimum Requirements: Must be 16 years of age or older with one (1) year of Sign Language training or experience. Sign Language Support II $21.00 - $26.01 Minimum Requirements: HS Diploma (or GED) with 1 year of Sign Language training or experience

Sign Language Support III $24.75 - $31.26 Minimum Requirements: HS Diploma (or GED) with 2 years of Sign Language training or experience interpreting with intermediate signing skills. Sign Language Support IIII\ $33.50 - $46.00 Minimum Requirements: HS Diploma (or GED) with 3 years of training and/or experience with advanced proficiency in Sign Language. Examples of Important Duties Key Responsibilities Provide sign language support for individuals and groups in recreational, educational, and social settings Facilitate communication between participants, staff, and instructors Adapt communication style to meet the practical, social, and programmatic needs of participants Maintain professionalism and confidentiality in all settings Collaborate with program staff to ensure smooth, inclusive program delivery Minimum Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: Ability to present information with accuracy, clarity, and appropriate vocabulary without misrepresentation or confusion Fluent expressive and receptive skills in American Sign Language Ability to work with diverse age groups and abilities Dependable, flexible, and able to work in a variety of recreation-based environments Preferred Qualifications: Experience providing sign language support in educational, recreational, or community settings Knowledge of Deaf culture and inclusive practices Relevant certifications or training (e.g., RID, BEI, state licensure), if applicable Supplemental Information Work Hours: After-school hours, evenings, weekends, and/or daytime hours Schedule varies by program and location Supplemental Information These positions are part-time/intermittent and do not include a benefits package.
