Job Summary/Primary Functions:

Log Still is seeking a seasonal Bourbon Specialist/Tour Guide to lead tastings, tours, and other customer experience events, providing information to individuals and groups. As assigned, the Bourbon Specialist/Tour Guide prepares and serves alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages to patrons, oversees the stock of liquor and bar supplies, and collects money for drinks served.

Major Job Responsibilities/Key Duties:

  • Prepares and serves Log Still Distillery products and nonalcoholic drinks as ordered, educating guests on products and offerings
  • Greets customers, provides customer with initial safety and administrative information and direction, and distributes any safety devices required
  • Conducts tasting/tour/experiences, providing interesting information about campus locations, buildings, or specific points of interest, while tailoring to the age and interest of customers, as well as skills and ability levels
  • Describes operations of mini-still in the Tasting Room as it relates to products served
  • Describes the operations of the production and distillation processes in the distillery
  • Solicits feedback from customers on Log Still Distilleryโ€™s products and works with distillers on developing ideas for โ€œspecial select offeringsโ€ based on consumer feedback and/or trends
  • Facilitates rich discussions that maintain customer interest, relaying important or interesting historical facts, dates, and anecdotes related to Log Still Distillery
  • Maintains the bar and keeps it clean and organized; attractively displays glasses and liquor bottles
  • Ensures that customers are of legal drinking age by checking photo identification
  • Uses proper judgment and, when necessary, declines service to customers who are intoxicated or disruptive
  • Collects money from customers for drinks prepared and served
  • Submits orders or creates requisition forms for liquor, beer, and other tasting-related supplies
  • Engages wit and charm to enhance the customer experience.
  • Maintains compliance with all applicable safety practices, environmental regulations, and established policies
  • Performs other duties as periodically assigned

Skills / Experience Required:

  • Must be 21 years of age or older
  • Knowledge of, and passion for, bourbon, whiskey, and distilled spirits
  • At least 2 years of related (bourbon) experience required
  • Trade knowledge - Understanding the retail and on-premise buyer mindset
  • Excellent customer service skills and focus on serving customers and attention to detail, going above and beyond what the customer expects
  • Ability to provide experiences (tours/tasting) that are clear, informative, and entertaining
  • Understanding and knowledge of (or strong desire to learn) the family history in the bourbon industry
  • Great public speaking skills
  • Ability to remain calm when dealing with unruly and argumentative patrons
  • Ability to learn point of service software used by company
  • Maintain a positive, friendly demeanor at all times
  • Must be punctual
  • Ability to complete orders quickly and accurately
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with proven ability to improvise when unexpected problems or emergencies arise
  • Strong oral communication skills: ability to talk to others to convey information effectively; strong written communication skills
  • Excellent time management skills: ability to be proactive and take initiative
  • Excellent organization and coordination skills- ability to manage priorities and routine functions effectively and efficiently
  • Empathy- Being aware of others' reactions and understanding why they react as they do
  • Teamwork โ€“ Ability to flex scope of responsibility and perform other functions as needed, regardless of job description
  • Proficiency with personal computers / laptops and associated programs (Windows, Microsoft office suite of programs)

Desired Skills:

  • Executive or Certified Bourbon Steward
  • Completion of ServSafe Training
  • Completion of Server Training in Alcohol Regulations (STAR)
  • Completion of mixology, barkeeping, or other related training required

Education Required:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Certified Bourbon Steward within 30 days of hire (or as class offerings allow)
  • Successful completion of SERV Safe Training within 30 days of hire
  • Successful completion of Server Training in Alcohol Regulations (STAR) upon hire

Special Working Conditions (e.g., Temperature Extremes, Lifting, Noise, Off-shifts)

  • Prolonged periods of standing and walking
  • Must be able to work in varied climatic conditions
  • No allergies/sensitivities to spirits distilling environment
  • Physically able to speak for long periods of time while walking without becoming winded
  • Flexible schedule to work on weekends
  • Must be able to lift at least 15 pounds
