Job description

The Portage County Highway department is hiring Seasonal General Laborers! These are great positions, especially if you enjoy working outdoors. These positions will work approximately March 15th until October 1, 2026. There is some flexibility with the start and end date of these seasonal positions.
Additionally, these positions work 4 days a week during the Spring and Summer months, so you can enjoy a 3 DAY WEEKEND!
Starting pay: $24.71 / hour
What are the primary job duties?
  • Perform manual road construction and maintenance tasks.
  • Install and remove snow fence
  • Replace guardrail, road patching
  • Cut brush, tar cracks, use hand and small power tools
  • Collect refuse from various roadways and other similar manual tasks.
  • Operate light and medium duty equipment for plowing, sanding, salting as well as for the transporting of maintenance materials.
  • Operate industrial tractors for roadside maintenance
  • Drive quad and tri axle trucks engaged in the transportation of construction and maintenance materials.
  • Operate higher level equipment in accordance with established procedures

What are the minimum qualifications?
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Commercial Drivers License with Air Brake Endorsement (CDL-Class B) and safe driving record.
  • Experience working physically demanding duties.
  • Experience operating heavy equipment preferred.
