What is a search engineer?

Search Engineers are specialized software engineers who design, build, and improve search systems that help users find relevant information quickly and efficiently. Their work often involves developing algorithms for indexing, querying, and ranking large volumes of data, as well as optimizing search accuracy and speed. Search Engineers may also work with natural language processing, machine learning, and relevance tuning to enhance the user search experience on websites, apps, or internal databases.

What does a search engineer do?

A search engineer has two primary responsibilities: to develop and program search engines and to optimize web content to achieve the best possible rankings in search results. As a search engineer, your job duties depend on your employer. If you work for a search engine company, like Google or Bing, then your job is to create the web application and algorithms that index websites and web pages to aggregate and rank search results. If you work for an e-commerce website or another business reliant on products or services, then your focus is on website analysis, keyword research, and content marketing.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a search engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Search Engineer, you need a solid background in computer science, expertise in information retrieval, and strong programming skills, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with search platforms like Elasticsearch or Solr, experience with large-scale distributed systems, and knowledge of ranking algorithms are typically required. Analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication distinguish top performers in this role. These skills are crucial for building efficient, relevant search experiences that meet both user and business needs.

How does a search engineer typically collaborate with other teams to improve search functionality?

Search Engineers often work closely with product managers, data scientists, and UX designers to understand user needs and analyze search performance. They collaborate with data engineering teams to ensure high-quality and well-structured data feeds, and frequently participate in cross-functional meetings to align on feature priorities and technical requirements. Effective communication skills are essential, as Search Engineers must translate complex technical concepts into actionable insights for non-technical stakeholders, ensuring that improvements enhance both search accuracy and overall user experience.

What is the difference between Search Engineer vs Data Scientist?

Job description

Job Description

General Motors (GM) is a global leader in automotive manufacturing and technology, driving innovation across electric vehicles, autonomous driving, and connected services. Our digital presence is critical to our success, and our in-house SEO team plays a pivotal role in ensuring our brands (Chevrolet, Cadillac, GMC, Buick, Buick, etc.) are discoverable and competitive in the digital landscape. We are seeking a highly motivated and analytical SEO Senior Specialist with a minimum of 3 years of hands-on SEO experience to join our in-house SEO team. In this role, you will focus primarily on technical SEO, performance analysis, and strategic implementation across a diverse portfolio of digital properties. You will work closely with media, site, analytics, product, and marketing partners to identify opportunities, drive measurable organic growth, and continuously improve our search performance.

What You'll Do:

  • Conduct comprehensive technical SEO audits of GM websites and experiences, identifying issues related to crawlability, indexability, site speed, mobile usability, structured data, and international SEO.
  • Partner with development and engineering teams to prioritize and implement technical SEO recommendations (e.g., HTML, CSS, JavaScript optimization, XML sitemaps, robots.txt, canonicalization, hreflang).
  • Monitor and troubleshoot technical SEO issues, including server errors, broken links, and rendering problems that may impact organic visibility and user experience.
  • Track, analyze, and report on key SEO performance metrics (organic traffic, rankings, conversions, engagement) using tools such as Google Search Console, Google Analytics, Adobe Analytics, SEMrush, Ahrefs, Screaming Frog, and DeepCrawl.
  • Develop and maintain SEO dashboards and recurring reports to communicate performance, insights, and opportunities to stakeholders across multiple departments.
  • Conduct in-depth keyword research and competitive analysis to identify new opportunities for organic growth and inform on-page and technical optimization strategies.
  • Provide SEO best practices and strategic guidance for new website content, site refreshes, and ongoing content optimization, including collaboration on page templates so SEO requirements are baked into development cycles.
  • Collaborate effectively with product, development, UX/UI, content, and marketing teams to ensure SEO is integrated throughout the digital product lifecycle.
  • Work collaboratively with GM's agency of record and other partners on prioritized SEO initiatives, including intake, refinement, and validation of recommendations.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications):

  • Minimum 3 years of dedicated SEO experience, with a strong emphasis on technical SEO and performance analysis.
  • Proven track record of driving measurable organic growth through technical implementations and data-driven strategies.
  • In-depth knowledge of search engine algorithms, ranking factors, and SEO best practices, including how they influence crawlability, indexability, and on-site experience.
  • Expert proficiency with industry-standard SEO tools such as Google Search Console, Google Analytics, Adobe Analytics, SEMrush, Ahrefs, Screaming Frog, DeepCrawl (or similar).
  • Solid understanding of web technologies and programming languages (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) as they relate to SEO, with the ability to read and interpret code for SEO purposes.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex data sets, identify trends and anomalies, and translate findings into clear, actionable recommendations.
  • Experience supporting website migrations, redesigns, and new site launches from an SEO perspective.
  • Foundational understanding of content SEO principles, including keyword integration, content structure, and user intent.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex SEO concepts to non-SEO stakeholders and influence decision-making.
  • Proactive, self-starter mentality with the ability to work independently, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and follow through on SEO recommendations.

What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications):

  • Experience working in a large, complex enterprise environment with multiple brands and stakeholder groups.
  • Experience with various Content Management Systems (CMS) and their SEO implications.
  • Knowledge of server-side vs. client-side rendering and how each approach affects SEO.
  • Familiarity with testing and conversion rate optimization (CRO) principles, including use of A/B testing or experimentation frameworks to validate SEO hypotheses.
  • Prior experience partnering with agencies and third-party vendors on SEO projects and tools.
