What is search engine optimization (SEO)?

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the process of improving a website’s visibility in search engine results pages (SERPs), such as Google or Bing. It involves optimizing website content, structure, and technical elements to increase organic (unpaid) traffic. SEO strategies include keyword research, on-page optimization, link building, and improving user experience. The goal is to make a website more attractive to search engines and users, ultimately driving more relevant visitors. Effective SEO helps businesses reach potential customers who are actively searching for related products or services.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a search engine optimization (SEO) specialist?

To thrive as a Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Specialist, you need a solid grasp of keyword research, on-page and off-page optimization, analytics, and content strategy, often supported by a marketing degree or relevant certification. Familiarity with tools like Google Analytics, SEMrush, Ahrefs, and experience with content management systems (CMS) such as WordPress are typically expected. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you interpret data and coordinate with writers and web developers. These skills ensure improved website visibility, increased organic traffic, and measurable business growth in a competitive digital landscape.

How does a search engine optimization (SEO) professional typically collaborate with content creators and web developers?

SEO professionals work closely with content creators to ensure that written materials are optimized for relevant keywords, user intent, and search engine guidelines. They also collaborate with web developers to implement technical improvements, such as site speed enhancements, structured data, and mobile optimization. Regular communication and teamwork are essential, as SEO recommendations often need to be balanced with creative goals and technical feasibility. This cross-functional collaboration helps ensure that both content and website infrastructure support higher search rankings and a better user experience.

Can you get a search engine optimization job with no experience?

Entry-level SEO jobs often do not require prior experience and may focus on skills like keyword research, content optimization, and familiarity with tools such as Google Analytics or SEMrush. Gaining certifications or building a portfolio through personal projects can improve chances of securing an SEO position without experience.

Is it hard to get a job in search engine optimization?

Getting a job in search engine optimization (SEO) can be competitive, but it is accessible with relevant skills such as keyword research, analytics, and familiarity with tools like Google Analytics and SEMrush. Building a strong portfolio, gaining certifications, and staying updated on industry trends can improve employment prospects.

Director of Marketing

The Forum Group PNW

Eugene, OR

Full-time

Posted 7 days ago

Job description

Jennie Joiner with The Forum Group PNW is partnering with an established consumer products organization in Eugene to recruit a Director of Marketing. This is a highly visible, hands-on leadership role for an experienced marketer who understands how to build and grow physical consumer brands across retail, wholesale, Amazon, and e-commerce channels. This is not a traditional corporate communications or primarily B2B marketing position. We are specifically seeking someone who has been directly involved in marketing products to consumers, ideally within consumer packaged goods (CPG), natural products, food/beverage, health and wellness, personal care, or another product-based industry. Experience marketing products sold through retailers, wholesalers, distributors, brokers, and Amazon is particularly valuable.

The Opportunity

Reporting directly to the President/CEO and serving as a member of the leadership team, the Director of Marketing will own the overall health, positioning, and performance of the company's brands. You'll lead strategy while remaining close enough to the work to personally drive key initiatives forward. The role encompasses brand management, Amazon and e-commerce, digital advertising, social and influencer marketing, packaging, new product development, agency management, analytics, and sales support. You'll supervise an experienced Senior Marketing Coordinator and manage several outside agency partners, including agencies supporting Amazon, social media, packaging, and other digital initiatives.

What You'll Do

You'll own and execute the overall marketing strategy while managing budgets, forecasts, priorities, and timelines. A significant focus will be on growing the company's brands through Amazon and other e-commerce channels, including evaluating sales trends, search visibility, advertising performance, pricing, promotions, profitability, and opportunities for growth. You'll manage outside agencies and ensure they're delivering against expectations while overseeing paid media, SEO, AI-driven search, influencer marketing, social media, email, and digital content.

You'll also partner closely with ownership and sales on new product development, product positioning, packaging and redesigns, go-to-market strategy, and sales materials. The sales organization works with a nationwide broker network, making an understanding of retail, wholesale, broker, or distributor-driven sales channels especially valuable. This person will have a seat at the leadership table and will be expected to bring meaningful marketing insight to broader company strategy and decision-making.

The Marketing Background We're Seeking

The strongest candidates will have experience building and growing a tangible consumer brand, rather than solely marketing services or focusing on corporate communications.

We would especially like to hear from candidates with experience in:

  • Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) or another physical consumer product category
  • Brand management and brand strategy
  • Marketing products sold through retailers, wholesalers, distributors, or broker networks
  • Amazon marketplace strategy and agency management
  • E-commerce performance, promotions, pricing, and sales analysis
  • Digital advertising, social media, influencer marketing, SEO, and emerging AI-driven search
  • Packaging development and redesign
  • New product development and product launches
  • Managing external marketing agencies and holding partners accountable for results
  • Using data and analytics to understand what's working and adjust marketing strategy accordingly
  • Supporting sales teams with tools and programs that drive product sell-through
  • Experience with Amazon marketing is highly desirable. The organization has an outside Amazon agency, so you don't need to personally execute every aspect of Amazon advertising; however, you should understand the channel well enough to own the strategy, evaluate performance, challenge the agency, and make informed business decisions.

Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree in Business, Marketing, or a related field is required, along with 5+ years of progressive marketing experience and a demonstrated ability to develop and execute successful marketing strategies.

We're looking for a leader who can comfortably move between high-level strategy and hands-on execution. You should be confident managing people, agencies, budgets, competing priorities, and cross-functional initiatives.

Strong analytical skills are important, as is an understanding of how marketing activity ultimately translates into consumer engagement and sales. Familiarity with Microsoft 365, Copilot, and AI-enabled marketing tools is also valuable.

Leadership & Culture

This is a small, collaborative organization where people work outside traditional job boundaries and genuinely help one another. The days are busy, but the culture does not revolve around consistently long hours.

The CEO has an extensive marketing background himself, including experience marketing major national consumer brands. He is looking for a Director who brings real depth in brand and consumer marketing and can serve as a strategic marketing partner, not simply someone who has coordinated marketing activities. You'll also inherit a strong Senior Marketing Coordinator who is highly knowledgeable about the company's brands and current initiatives and will be an excellent resource during the transition.

If you are a consumer brand marketer who understands how to take a physical product from positioning and packaging through digital marketing, Amazon, retail channels, and ultimately into the hands of consumers, this is an opportunity worth exploring.
