What is the difference between Sealing Technologies vs Mechanical Seal Technicians?

AspectSealing TechnologiesMechanical Seal Technicians
CertificationsOften requires specialized sealing technology certificationsTypically certified in mechanical seal installation and maintenance
Work EnvironmentIndustrial plants, manufacturing facilities, research labsIndustrial sites, maintenance workshops, equipment repair settings
Industry UsageUsed across various industries including oil & gas, chemical, manufacturingPrimarily involved in installing, repairing, and maintaining mechanical seals

Sealing Technologies professionals focus on designing and developing sealing solutions, while Mechanical Seal Technicians specialize in installing and maintaining mechanical seals. Both roles require technical knowledge, but Sealing Technologies roles are more engineering-oriented, whereas Mechanical Seal Technicians are more hands-on maintenance specialists.

What are sealing technologies?

Sealing technologies refer to the methods, materials, and devices used to create barriers that prevent the passage of liquids, gases, dust, or other contaminants between two surfaces. These technologies are essential in a wide range of industries, including automotive, aerospace, manufacturing, and oil and gas, to ensure the safe and efficient operation of machinery and systems. Sealing solutions can include gaskets, o-rings, mechanical seals, and advanced composite materials, each designed for specific applications and environmental conditions. The choice of sealing technology depends on factors like pressure, temperature, chemical compatibility, and mechanical movement.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in sealing technologies, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in sealing technologies often encounter challenges such as ensuring compatibility of sealing materials with various chemicals, managing high-pressure or extreme-temperature environments, and meeting stringent industry standards. These challenges can be addressed by staying up-to-date with the latest advancements in materials science, collaborating closely with engineering and quality assurance teams, and participating in ongoing training. Effective communication with suppliers and clients is also essential to tailor solutions to specific application needs and to ensure reliability and safety.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Sealing Technologies Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Sealing Technologies Engineer, you need a strong background in mechanical engineering, materials science, and knowledge of sealing applications, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with CAD software, finite element analysis tools, and industry standards like ISO or ASME is essential. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you design and implement reliable sealing solutions. These competencies ensure the integrity, safety, and efficiency of mechanical systems in industries such as automotive, aerospace, and manufacturing.

About Us:
Sealing Technologies, a Parsons company, innovates and delivers high-performance deployable anywhere technologies that push what's possible at the edge, enabling organizations across the globe to solve complex challenges with speed and confidence. We design, engineer, and deliver products and deployable technologies built for environments where traditional infrastructure falls short.

Position Overview:
Sealing Technologies, a Parsons Company, is looking for an experienced Quality Control Manager to join the Product Operations team. As the Quality Control Manager, you play a crucial role in overseeing and managing the entire end-to-end quality control process for technology testing and kitting operations within SealingTech's Enterprise Modernization Center. The Quality Control Manager owns the execution of product conformance, ensuring that all products and kits meet required quality standards before leaving the facility.

This role is distinct from Quality Assurance (QA). While QA is responsible for the Quality Management System (QMS), internal audits, and ISO certification governance, the Quality Control Manager is responsible for the operational execution of testing, inspection, and product release. You will lead a Quality Control (QC) team of engineers and manage the materials/tools required for testing and inspection.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Manage the end-to-end execution of testing, kitting verification, visual inspections, and packing. Ensure rigorous checks against the Bill of Materials (BOM) for every product/order, verifying part numbers, quantities, and revisions.
  • Enforce cosmetic standards for hardware (ensuring devices are scratch/dent-free) and oversee data integrity for serial number capturing, ensuring physical asset tags match digital inventory records.
  • Oversee the custom hardware testing environment, including burn-in and automated testing for produced and procured equipment.
  • Verify that dunnage is applied correctly to prevent transit damage and that presentation meets guidelines.
  • Identify recurring quality risks and inefficiencies within testing, kitting, and inspection processes. Recommend and implement improvements to reduce defects, rework, and delivery risk.
  • Partner with QA to identify trends, systemic quality issues, and opportunities for standardization beyond individual lot-level issues. Escalate recurring or systemic nonconformances to QA for QMS review.
  • Create, maintain, and update Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for testing and inspection activities.
  • Support the design-to-production transition by reviewing new or revised products for testability, inspection readiness, and BOM clarity before they hit production.
  • Serve as the primary subject matter expert during customer, program, or partner testing requests and audits. Own the external-facing process walkthroughs, providing demonstrations, records, and explanations regarding how testing and product release activities are performed.
  • Support incoming inspection criteria, provide defect data to Logistics/Purchasing/QA for supplier performance monitoring, and assist with containment actions when issues are identified.
  • Collaborate with various departments, including product development, procurement, production, logistics and other program teams, to develop testing plans that align with company and customer standards
  • Allocate labor, equipment, and materials to optimize testing efficiency while controlling costs. Create testing schedules based on production forecasts.
  • Manage internal NCM (Nonconforming Materials), lead investigations into errors, and implement operational Corrective and Preventive Actions (CAPA).
  • Collect and analyze data to produce Quality Control reports (Testing Results, Certificates of Conformance, Packing Lists, etc.).

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree or relevant experience.
  • 7+ years of progressive Quality Control experience in a technology hardware, electronics, IT equipment, or manufacturing environment.
  • Previous experience in a Quality Control in logistics, manufacturing or technology role, with progressive responsibility.
  • Experience in a supervisory or management capacity is highly valuable.
  • Familiarity with QC testing processes, machinery, and equipment.
  • Knowledge of ISO 9001 standards.
  • Understanding of manufacturing principles and continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Ability to analyze complex QC issues, identify root causes, and develop effective solutions to improve processes and address challenges.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills are necessary to lead and motivate QC team.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for collaborating with cross-functional teams and conveying information clearly to employees and management.
  • Effective organizational skills manage multiple tasks, priorities, and deadlines in a fast-paced production environment.
  • Proficiency in using relevant software tools for QC planning, scheduling, and data analysis.
