Job description

Plant Electrician

As a Plant Electrician at one of our Alaskan facilities, you will be responsible for maintaining and repairing electrical systems and equipment within the seafood processing plant. Your duties will include troubleshooting electrical issues, performing preventive maintenance, installing new electrical components, and adhering to electrical safety standards. You will work closely with other maintenance personnel to ensure the smooth operation of the plant. Strong electrical knowledge, problem-solving skills, and attention to detail are essential for this role.

Essential Functions/Qualifications

The responsibilities of the position include the following:

  • Installs, services and repairs lighting fixtures, electrical panels, outlets and wiring.
  • Operates, power hand tools and other specialized electrical equipment.
  • Installs, repairs, and services specialized electrical equipment and machinery.
  • Reads electrical circuit diagrams.
  • Installs conductors, splices cable, builds terminations and does necessary hook-up for primary power lines.
  • Lays underground conduit for electrical lines and installs low voltage electric lines and conduits for telephone systems.
  • Maintains a list of assigned and self-generated tasks in the form of a written "To Do" list.
  • May travel to other plant locations for electrical issues that may arise.
  • Properly stores uninstalled material, and work-in-progress materials from weather, vandals, pilferage, or other deleterious causes.
  • Take the necessary steps to keep all dust and dirt under control as much as possible. Broom-clean the job site and remove trash appropriately. Supervise cleaning services when applicable. Protect the surrounding environment from runoff, fugitive dust, and other pollution from job sites. Recycle where possible.
  • Uphold and support company rules and policies.
  • Works in a safe manner and takes action to correct or report safety hazards.
  • Other duties as assigned to ensure the facility and organization is fully supported and successful.

Education and Experience

  • At least 2-3 years' experience in electrical work.
  • Must possess a valid electrician's license.
  • Proven experience as an electrician.
  • Experience in Seafood industrial and/or commercial electrical systems.
  • Demonstrable ability to use electrical and hand tools (e.g. wire strippers, voltmeter etc.) and electrical drawings and blueprints.
  • Thorough knowledge of safety procedures and legal regulations and guidelines.

Work Environment and Schedule

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and extreme cold. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions; risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Position requires onsite presence at one of our Alaska processing facilities, and the ability to travel, including at times in remote locations.

Physical Demands

This role must be capable of working consecutive, long and variable work shifts for extended periods of time. Shifts typically range from 12 to 16 hours per day with periodic breaks depending on work demands. The work is strenuous and sometimes hazardous due to exposure to operating machinery, mechanical parts, fumes, chemicals, pressurized fluids, vibration and with the vessel operating under all types of weather conditions including extreme cold. This means standing, walking and maintaining balance in rough seas or other types of weather.

Both hands must be capable of grabbing, holding or gripping rope, rails, equipment and vessel structures for frequent periods of time. Forceful grasping along with repetitive finger and hand use is occasional. Applicants must be able to climb up and down, safely ascend and descend ladders, work in small and confined spaces, and pass all safety test requirements.
