What is the difference between Seafloor Mapping vs Marine Geologist?
| Aspect | Seafloor Mapping | Marine Geologist |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Geospatial certifications, GIS skills, oceanography knowledge | Geology degree, fieldwork experience, research background |
| Work Environment | Research vessels, offshore sites, mapping software labs | Laboratories, field sites, academic or research institutions |
| Industry Usage | Hydrographic surveys, ocean mapping, seabed analysis | Marine research, sediment analysis, geological assessments |
Seafloor Mapping focuses on creating detailed maps of the ocean floor using geospatial technology and survey equipment, often working on vessels or in labs. Marine Geologists study the composition, structure, and history of underwater rocks and sediments, typically conducting field research and laboratory analysis. While both roles involve ocean environments, Seafloor Mapping emphasizes mapping technology, whereas Marine Geology centers on geological analysis and research.

About the Job
Integral is seeking an experienced and highly motivated project to consultant-level scientist to serve as the Technical Lead for our Seafloor Sediment Profile and Plan View Imaging (SPI-PV) service area. This role will provide scientific leadership, ensure technical excellence in seafloor imagery analysis, and support strategic growth of the SPI-PV service line. The ideal candidate is an established subject matter expert with strong analytical, project management, and client engagement skills.
This position may offer in-office, remote, or hybrid opportunities based on the candidate's location and the needs of the organization.

Responsibilities
- Direct the analysis and interpretation of SPI-PV images and seafloor video
- Serve as lead author of SPI-PV technical reports, oversee delivery, and ensure the quality of SPI-PV deliverables
- Support management of SPI-PV projects from scoping, mobilization and demobilization, field data acquisition, and analysis and reporting
- Interact with clients as Integral's SPI-PV subject matter expert
- Support SPI-PV business development by contributing to/leading proposal efforts, giving internal and external presentations on SPI-PV technology, and participating in technical conferences.
Technical Leadership
- Lead the analysis, interpretation, and synthesis of seafloor imagery with supporting data sets (e.g., MBES, sediment chemistry, benthic taxonomy) to characterize seafloor habitats and benthic processes.
- Ensure consistency, accuracy, and defensibility of imagery interpretation.
- Contribute to method development and best practices for seafloor imaging, including AI assisted image analysis, seafloor modeling using structure-from-motion, and advanced communication and visualization technologies
- Mentor junior staff in imagery analysis, interpretation, and technical writing.
Collaboration and Teamwork
This position will coordinate with a diverse team of scientists who specialize in:
- GIS mapping and spatial analysis
- AI and machine learning for image analysis
- Offshore wind environmental assessment and permitting
- Contaminated sediment site assessment
- Hydrodynamic/sediment transport modeling
- Oceanography
Qualifications
- Advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in marine science, oceanography, geology, environmental science, or a related field.
- 5+ years of professional experience analyzing and interpreting SPI-PV imagery.
- Demonstrated project management experience, including proposal development, budget management, schedules, and multidisciplinary teams.
- Strong technical writing skills with a proven ability to produce high-quality scientific and regulatory reports.
- Excellent verbal communication and presentation skills.
- Experience working directly with clients and stakeholders.
