Labor & Delivery Scrub Technician
Position Summary
The Labor & Delivery Scrub Technician is an integral member of the L&D care team, providing perioperative and clinical support under the direction of a Registered Nurse. This role functions independently as a scrub tech for cesarean section deliveries and supports safe, efficient patient care by maintaining sterile technique, anticipating surgical needs, and ensuring equipment and supply readiness. All duties are performed in alignment with AST standards, OR policies, and Trinity Health values.
Key Responsibilities
• Perform scrub tech duties for cesarean sections, maintaining strict aseptic technique
• Prepare and set up the OR with surgical instruments and supplies
• Anticipate and meet the needs of surgeons and the surgical team during procedures
• Maintain accurate counts of sponges, needles, and instruments
• Assist with patient transport, positioning, and basic care activities
• Support vaginal deliveries, including room setup and post-delivery care, under RN direction
• Clean, stock, and maintain OR and L&D equipment and environments
• Handle and transport laboratory specimens and assist with waived testing
• Respond to obstetrical emergencies, codes, and disaster alerts
• Collaborate with ancillary departments and participate in education and quality initiatives
Qualifications
Education: Graduate of an approved Surgical Technologist program or equivalent experience
Certification: Current BLS required; AST Certification preferred
Experience: Minimum 2 years as an OR or L&D Scrub Tech; 6 months direct caregiver experience
Skills: Strong aseptic technique knowledge, customer service orientation, multitasking ability, and physical capability to lift up to 50 lbs
Working Conditions
Fast-paced clinical and surgical environment with exposure to infectious materials. Position requires standing, walking, bending, manual dexterity, and variable shifts including weekends and holidays.
