Service Island Attendant (Bus Cleaner/Fueler)

Location: Orlando, FL
Pay Rate: $22.93 per hour
Job Type: Full-Time | Shift Work (Evenings, Weekends, Holidays) | Bargaining Unit


About the Role

LYNX is seeking a Service Island Attendant to keep our fleet clean, fueled, and ready to serve the community. This safety-sensitive position involves fueling buses, cleaning interiors and exteriors, and performing basic maintenance checks. If you enjoy hands-on work and want to make a difference in public transportation, this is the job for you!


What You’ll Do

  • Fuel buses and service vehicles; check oil, water, and tire conditions.
  • Drive buses through wash racks and clean interiors (floors, seats, windows).
  • Remove trash, refill fare boxes, and complete cleaning/service documentation.
  • Operate forklifts and automated cleaning equipment as needed.
  • Safely maneuver buses and support vehicles on public roadways.

What We’re Looking For

  • Education/Experience: High School diploma or GED plus 1 year of related experience in vehicle servicing or industrial cleaning.
  • Licenses: Valid Florida CDL Class “B” with Passenger (“P”) endorsement and airbrakes.
  • Must pass DOT physical exam and maintain a valid DOT Medical Card.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and lift up to 50 lbs.

Description:

This position is responsible for fueling vehicles, checking engine fluids, cleaning vehicles (inside and out) in varying weather conditions, and driving buses through wash rack. This position requires shift work including evenings, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. Incumbent in this position is eligible to participate in the Bloodborne Pathogen Program.

This position is considered safety-sensitive and subject to the provisions of the Substance Abuse Program Policy for Safety Sensitive Positions.

As a member of a bargaining unit, this position follows a seniority-based system for bidding on shifts and days off.

Essential Functions:

  • Drives buses through wash rack and scrubs exteriors; parks buses in assigned locations.
  • Adds fuel to buses and service vehicles in fuel island; steam cleans engines and other units.
  • Checks oil and water in buses and service vehicles and adds as needed.
  • Cleans buses and service vehicles and complete cleaning forms.
  • Checks tires for air and tread conditions.
  • Sweeps and mops bus floors, cleans interiors including walls, seats and windows; sprays for insects as required.
  • Operates automated cleaning equipment.
  • Cleans and removes trash from buses and support vehicles.
  • Refills fare box with media cards.
  • Operates Fork Truck as needed.
  • Maintains written record of buses parked and cleaned; maintains a written record of vehicles to which fuel and

oil was added. May enter servicing and cleaning data by using data entry equipment.

  • Lifts heavy covers and doors.
  • Operates buses and support vehicles on public roadways and performs vehicle swap-outs.
  • Performs other duties as may be required or assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or GED plus one year of full-time related work experience in a position successfully performing janitorial and/or industrial cleaning duties or a position responsible for the cleaning, maintenance and/or servicing of a variety of vehicles; or an equivalent combination of related education, training, or experience.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class “B” with a “P” (Passenger) endorsement and airbrakes. Must possess and maintain a safe driving record.
  • Must successfully pass the LYNX CDL Defensive Driving Course.
  • Must pass a DOT physical exam and obtain a DOT Medical Card that is valid for at least one year.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):

  • Knowledge of basic auto mechanics.
  • Skilled in reading fuel/oil measuring devices.
  • Skills and ability to read and write legibly; use basic math; and determine time of day or night.
  • Ability to follow established safety practices.
  • Ability to properly drive buses through wash rack and properly park buses.
  • Ability to pressure wash engines, wheels and other parts of the bus.
  • Ability to complete Work Orders, Fuel Cards and/or other required paperwork or electronic data entry forms.
  • Ability to operate upholstery cleaning machine.
  • Ability to work with chemicals and follow applicable MSDS guidelines.
  • Ability to read, understand and interpret operations and service manuals.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to effectively communicate in English, both orally and in writing.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with those encountered in the course of work using principles of excellent customer service.
  • Ability to exhibit a professional, courteous demeanor.
  • Ability to work in a diverse environment.

Work Environment and Special Considerations:

  • Will be available to work days, nights, weekends and holidays.
  • The functions of this position are primarily performed outdoors under varying weather conditions with exposure to various fuels and other chemical agents. 
  • Must be able to work with commercial cleaners and toxic materials. 
  • Requires the stamina and ability to stand and fuel vehicles in all weather conditions; bend, stoop, walk, run, scrub, push, stretch, kneel and lift 50 lbs. 
  • Requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing, speaking and color perception; dexterity in operating equipment.
  • Incumbent is eligible for participation in the Bloodborne Pathogen Program.
  • LYNX provides the community with much needed public transportation, and it is important for the Agency to resume its services as quickly and as safely as possible in the event of any natural, technological, or human-caused emergency or disaster. This position is considered a mission critical member of LYNX’s emergency preparation and response efforts during an emergency or disaster and as such, may be asked to work during these emergencies or disasters.
