What is script reading?

Script reading is the process of reviewing and analyzing scripts, typically for film, television, or theater, to assess their quality, structure, and potential for production. Script readers evaluate elements such as plot, character development, dialogue, and pacing, and often provide coverage or feedback reports for producers, agents, or studios. This role helps decision-makers determine which scripts are worth developing further. Script reading is an essential step in the entertainment industry, ensuring that only promising projects move forward.

What are script reading jobs?

A script reader's primary responsibilities are to read a screenplay for a movie or TV show, evaluate the content, and provide feedback on what works and what does not work. You examine all features in the script, including story, concept, dialogue, pacing, characters, structure, and marketability. Script reading is used for pilots to decide if an idea should move forward, to choose a rating, or to see if a particular writer is a good fit for a company. Your duties include reading, analyzing, and writing coverage or a summary. Your employer or supervisor uses this to decide whether to move the script forward or not. You can find script reading jobs through a studio, production company, or talent agency.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a script reader, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Script Reader, you need strong analytical reading skills, a deep understanding of story structure, and familiarity with the film and television industry, often supported by a degree in film, writing, or a related field. Proficiency in script coverage formatting, screenplay software (like Final Draft), and knowledge of industry-standard evaluation criteria are typically required. Excellent written communication, attention to detail, and the ability to give constructive feedback are standout soft skills in this role. These skills ensure that script readers can effectively assess material, provide valuable insights, and support development teams in selecting promising projects.

What are some common challenges faced by script readers and how can they overcome them?

Script readers often face the challenge of reviewing a large volume of scripts under tight deadlines while maintaining objectivity and attention to detail. Balancing the need to quickly assess a script’s potential with the responsibility of providing thorough, insightful coverage can be demanding. To overcome these challenges, script readers develop efficient reading strategies, use structured coverage templates, and continuously refine their analytical skills. Collaborating with other readers and participating in feedback sessions can also help ensure consistent evaluations and professional growth.

What is the difference between Script Reading vs Script Supervising?

AspectScript ReadingScript Supervising
Primary RoleReviewing and analyzing scripts for content, structure, and suitabilityOverseeing script continuity, consistency, and adherence during production
Required SkillsStrong analytical skills, understanding of storytelling, script formattingAttention to detail, organizational skills, knowledge of production processes
Work EnvironmentTypically office-based, script development teamsOn-set or production office during filming
Industry UsageUsed in development and pre-production phasesUsed during filming to ensure script accuracy

While both roles involve working with scripts, Script Reading focuses on analyzing and evaluating scripts during development, whereas Script Supervising involves maintaining script continuity and accuracy during production. Both roles require strong understanding of storytelling and script formatting, but they serve different stages of the filmmaking process.

How much do script readers make?

Script readers typically earn between $15 and $50 per hour, with some earning a flat fee per script or project. Entry-level positions often pay less, while experienced readers with industry connections can command higher rates, especially if they work freelance or on a contract basis.

How to get a job as a script reader?

To become a script reader, develop strong analytical and writing skills, and gain experience by reading and evaluating scripts regularly. Many script readers have backgrounds in film, screenwriting, or related fields, and some positions require knowledge of industry software or script formatting standards. Building a network in the entertainment industry and applying to production companies, studios, or literary agencies can also help secure a position.

Is script reading a good side hustle?

Script reading can be a viable side hustle for those with strong reading, analytical, and communication skills, often involving reviewing scripts for tone, consistency, and quality. It typically requires familiarity with industry standards and may involve flexible hours, making it suitable for part-time work or freelance projects. However, income varies based on experience and the volume of work available in the entertainment or publishing industries.

Job description

And we've created a culture here that cares just as deeply about the career you're building. Ours is a no ego culture of collaboration and innovation where those seeking their next challenge can find big opportunities and make a huge impact on the lives of all those who we protect. We don't just want you to work here. We want you to grow and thrive here.
We're embracing a hybrid work model that enables our teams to split their time between office and home. Hybrid for us means we expect our teams to come together in our state-of-the-art office on two core days, typically Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday - working together in person and choosing where they work for the remainder of the week. We all benefit from flexibility and get to use the best of both worlds to get our work done.

Why are we hiring?

Well, we're growing and thriving. So, we need smart, talented, and humble people who share our values to join us as we disrupt the home security space and relentlessly pursue our mission of keeping Every Home Secure.

The Job
The Financial Systems Analyst II, Business Systems reports to the Senior Manager, Business Systems and is the technical owner on a lean, high-impact team. You will own the integration layer that connects SimpliSafe's financial and operational systems: NetSuite and Coupa at the center, with a live network of retail, logistics, payments, and financial partners around them. This is a builder's role. You will write the scripts, design the monitoring, automate what should be automated, and use AI to improve how everything works. When something breaks, you find it first and fix it. When there's a smarter way to build something, you build it. You will also share technical ownership of Coupa and NetSuite administration, acting as the technical SME while the primary admin handles day-to-day operations.

What You'll Do:
Own and develop integrations into, out of, and between NetSuite and Coupa, including EDI and retail connectivity via SPS Commerce, banking and payments integrations, freight invoice processing via Infios, and legal invoice routing via Brightflag
Write and maintain custom NetSuite SuiteScript records (Scheduled Scripts, User Event Scripts, Map/Reduce Scripts, RESTlets) to automate business logic, support data flows, and handle integration error conditions
Own the Grafana integration monitoring and alerting platform, respond to incidents in real time, and continuously build out coverage to catch issues before users do
Manage SSH and PGP keys for secure bank and financial partner file transfers, including key rotation and partner coordination
Serve as the technical SME for Coupa P2P and NetSuite, owning complex configurations and integration issues as shared administrator alongside the primary admin
Use AI tools to move faster and build better, and help shape how the Business Systems team scales AI use across the function
Partner with Finance (Accounting and AP), Logistics (supply planning, freight, fulfillment, and manufacturing operations), and Retail (sales operations) on system initiatives and escalations
Find automation opportunities and build them; active work is already in progress with more to come

What You'll Bring:
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related technical field, or equivalent professional experience
3 to 5 years in a technical business systems, ERP, or integration analyst role
Solid JavaScript background required; NetSuite SuiteScript experience is a strong plus
Experience managing integrations between enterprise systems via REST APIs or SFTP
Ability to troubleshoot and resolve cross-system integration failures independently

Skills, Abilities and Knowledge:
NetSuite platform and SuiteScript experience; comfort with scripting languages generally
Familiarity with EDI concepts and logistics data flows with retail and 3PL partners preferred
Experience with Coupa or a comparable P2P platform preferred
Experience with Grafana, Datadog, or similar monitoring tools
Strong diagnostic instincts; comfortable reading logs, tracing failures, and finding root cause
Clear communicator across technical and business teams
Comfortable with reactive, iterative support work, not just structured projects
Located in the Boston, MA area; hybrid with two core in-office days per week

What Values You'll Share

  • Customer Obsessed - Building deep empathy for our customers, putting them at the core of our work, and developing strong, long-term relationships with them.
  • Aim High - Always challenging ourselves and others to raise the bar.
  • No Ego - Maintaining a "no job too small" attitude, and an open, inclusive and humble style.
  • One Team - Taking a highly collaborative approach to achieving success.
  • Lift As We Climb - Investing in developing others and helping others around us succeed.
  • Lean & Nimble - Working with agility and efficiency to experiment in an often ambiguous environment.

What We Offer

  • A mission- and values-driven culture and a safe, inclusive environment where you can build, grow and thrive
  • A comprehensive total rewards package that supports your wellness and provides security for SimpliSafers and their families (For more information on our total rewards please click here)
  • Free SimpliSafe system and professional monitoring for your home.
  • Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) that bring people together, give opportunities to network, mentor and develop, and advocate for change.

The target annual base pay range for this role is $71,600 to $95,400

This target annual base pay range represents our good-faith estimate of what we expect to pay for this role. We use a market-based compensation approach to set our target annual base pay ranges and make adjustments annually.
