Job description

Scripps Mercy Hospital has served central and downtown San Diego since 1890 and is the oldest medical center in the county. The San Diego campus is located near the corner of 5th Avenue and Washington Street in Hillcrest.

Scripps Mercy Hospital consists of two campuses in San Diego and Chula Vista. 

Scripps Mercy Hospital San Diego’s campus includes the O’Toole Breast Care Center, a 24-hour emergency room that is a Level I Trauma Center, outpatient physical rehabilitation, minimally invasive robotic surgery and our childbirth unit (including a Level II neonatal intensive care unit).

This is a non-benefited casual/per diem position with varied 10-hour shifts located at Scripps Mercy Hospital San Diego. Schedule will be every other weekend, plus one day during the week.

The Clinical Pharmacist I will work at Scripps Mercy Hospital San Diego, serving central and downtown San Diego. With the longest tenured Level I Trauma Center in the county, the team at Mercy San Diego thrives in a fast-paced environment and prides itself in its efficiency and teamwork in providing comprehensive care.

Responsibilities include:

  • Primarily operation focused centrally based; participates in direct patient care as clinical competencies are approved and on approved shifts.
  • Documents the care provided to patients.
  • Supervises the drug distribution operation: responsible for assuring safe and effective alternatives as appropriate.
  • Contributes to the accomplishment of initiatives to improve the cost-effectiveness of drug therapy.
  • Routinely communicates with physicians, nurses, and patients regarding drug therapy.
  • Demonstrates ability to provide age-specific patient care as established for area and job title.
  • Demonstrates ability to perform competencies and perform activities as outlined in the Pharmacist Authorities policy.
  • Provides pharmaceutical care according to standards established by Scripps Health Pharmacy, to assigned group of patients.
  • Reviews and evaluates individual drug orders for appropriateness, safety, and cost.

The following are not eligible for hiring incentives:

  • Internal candidates
  • Rehires that left Scripps less than 3 years ago
  • Candidates with less than 1 year of experience

In order to remain eligible for your retention incentive the following criteria must be met:

  • Must remain in original hired FTE Status and Shift (if specified in offer letter)
  • Must remain in original department/specialty
  • Must remain in original Job Title
  • Transfers to other locations will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis and may result in forfeiting remaining incentive bonus unless specifically noted in your offer letter.

Required Education/Experience/Specialized Skills:

  • BS Pharmacy or Pharm.D. Degree


Required Certification/Registration:

  • California Pharmacist License
  • AHA BLS
  • ACLS certification required prior to being trained to respond to codes, can be obtained within 6 months of hire


Preferred Education/Experience/Specialized Skills/Certification:

  • PGY1 residency or 3 years' experience in relevant practice area.
