Scribe Assistant information

Is it hard to get hired as a scribe?

Getting hired as a scribe assistant can vary depending on the employer and location, but generally requires strong attention to detail, good communication skills, and sometimes certification or training. Competition may be moderate, and having relevant experience or familiarity with medical terminology can improve chances of employment.

Will scribes be replaced by AI?

Scribe assistants perform tasks such as documenting medical encounters and managing records, which currently require human judgment and understanding. While AI tools can assist with transcription and data entry, they are not yet capable of fully replacing the nuanced decision-making and communication skills of a scribe assistant. Human oversight remains essential in ensuring accuracy and compliance in medical documentation.

How to get a scribe job with no experience?

To get a scribe assistant position with no experience, focus on developing strong typing, medical terminology, and note-taking skills. Volunteer or seek entry-level roles to gain relevant experience, and consider completing a short training course or certification in medical transcription or scribing to improve your qualifications.

Who gets paid more, MA or scribe?

Medical assistants (MAs) generally earn higher wages than scribe assistants because they have more extensive training, certification, and responsibilities in clinical settings. Scribes typically have lower pay as they mainly assist physicians with documentation and do not require formal medical training. Salary differences can vary based on location, experience, and employer.

What is the difference between Scribe Assistant vs Medical Transcriptionist?

Both roles are vital in healthcare but differ in workflow, tools, and certification requirements.

Job description

Scribes shadow Emergency Room Physicians and complete all documentation tasks for the doctors as well as organize pending lab and radiology results. We provide a comprehensive training manual and a one-month "hands-on" training program where new scribes work alongside experienced scribes.

Initially, new scribes are only learning how to perform their job duties. The real benefit of the program, however, is what the scribes learn outside of their specific duties. In the ER, doctors treat patients with ailments and illnesses that span all specialties of medicine.
The individual scribes can learn as much as they want in regards to almost all areas of medicine. Additionally, the scribes develop personal relationships with 20 or more ER physicians, and are able to learn the practice styles of many different doctors.

What We Look For in Applicants

  • Ability to make a two-year part time commitment.
  • Applicants should have aspirations to become a Medical Doctor, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, Physician Assistant, or Nurse Practitioner.
  • Currently enrolled in BA/BS program with majority of science coursework completed, post-baccalaureate students, or a recent college graduate.
  • Completion of Organic Chemistry is preferred, but not mandatory. Anatomy and medical terminology are a plus.
  • Ability to multitask with attention to detail.
  • Team player with strong work ethic who displays integrity and a willingness to be flexible.
  • Minimum typing speed of 70 words per minute.
  • Computer literate.
  • Excellent English language skills (orally and in writing).

What We Offer

  • Flexible schedule: all scribes work some days, some nights, some weekends, and some holidays.
  • We will never schedule you to work when you have class.
  • No prior experience is necessary. Training is provided over a one-month period. We typically hire from January - November replacing current scribes that gain entrance to medical school. We start four scribes at a time, which is why we train over a number of months.
  • Physicians that will treat you like a team member.
  • Small group lectures on a variety of topics.
  • Social events with physicians and other scribes.
  • Writing group to help you prepare your application and personal statement.
  • Mock interviews with feedback during the year you are applying.

Our program is really a "program" and not just a job. Our focus it not to merely provide a service to our physicians, but to give our scribes a clinical experience in a family environment. We work hard to give our scribes the support needed to become proficient while providing opportunities to learn medicine from great physicians that love to teach. Our goal is to have past scribes that are in medical school remain in contact so they can help mentor those following in their footsteps. In return, we ask our scribes to be loyal to our program while putting our scheduling before everything but school.
