Job Summary: The Health Sciences Intern performs delegated clinical and administrative duties in support of clinic operations and patient care. The internship will be an immersive program to get high school students acquainted with and excited about careers in health care.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The intern will be trained to perform assigned duties, which may include the following tasks:

  • Greet and prepare patients for appointments, confirm identity, record vital signs and other appropriate information, verify medication and immunization records, and document interactions.
  • Work with certified staff to accurately enter and document medical information in patients' records (flow sheet, progress notes, immunization records, growth charts, etc.).
  • Support vaccine clinics and public health events with data entry, patient "traffic control", runner, registration, or other needed roles.
  • Maintain cleanliness, inventory, and preparedness of assigned exam rooms.
  • Stock exam rooms, nurse's station, vaccine administration station, and lab daily.
  • Organize and maintain clean and soiled utility rooms and storage areas.
  • Perform patient outreach as directed by the Clinical Team Supervisor.
  • Assist the front desk as needed to expedite check-in of patients.
  • Perform administrative tasks for site leadership in support of operations and clinical care.
  • Support Outreach Migrant Camp events (requires own transportation)

         Perform other duties as assigned

         Handle protected health information (PHI) in a manner consistent with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA)

HIPAA Requirements:

Handle protected health information (PHI) in a manner consistent with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) and subsequent related laws and VG policies. This position may have access to PHI via the electronic health record system used by VG in order to perform the functions of the job. This position is required to read the content of these records only to the extent needed to accomplish the assigned task.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

         Must be selected from an eligible high school health sciences program.

         Strong organizational and time management skills.

         Strong attention to detail.

         Demonstrated skills in oral and written communication.

         Ability to develop and maintain trusted relationships with leadership.

         Bilingual/bicultural preferred, not required.

Education and Experience:

         Enrolled in High School

         Health Sciences High School coursework

         Must be 16 years of age or older

   Travel: reliable transportation to primary internship site
