The main difference is that a Science Program Manager oversees scientific projects, coordinating teams and resources, while a Research Scientist conducts experiments and generates scientific data. Both roles require strong scientific credentials, but their daily tasks and focus differ significantly.

What does a Science Program Manager do?

A Science Program Manager oversees the planning, coordination, and execution of scientific projects and programs. They work closely with research teams, stakeholders, and funding agencies to ensure that projects meet their objectives, stay within budget, and adhere to timelines. Their responsibilities often include grant management, facilitating communication between different departments, and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. Science Program Managers play a key role in translating scientific goals into actionable plans and helping organizations achieve their research and development objectives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Science Program Manager, and why are they important?

To excel as a Science Program Manager, you need a strong background in scientific research or project management, typically supported by an advanced degree in a scientific field. Familiarity with project management tools (e.g., Microsoft Project, Asana) and certification such as PMP can be highly valuable. Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills are crucial for managing teams and coordinating across departments. These skills ensure effective alignment of scientific objectives, timely project delivery, and successful collaboration among stakeholders.

How does a Science Program Manager typically collaborate with researchers and cross-functional teams?

Science Program Managers play a crucial role in connecting researchers with other departments such as engineering, product development, and regulatory affairs. They coordinate project timelines, facilitate communication among stakeholders, and help resolve scientific or logistical challenges that arise during research initiatives. Regular meetings, status updates, and collaborative planning sessions are typical, allowing the Program Manager to ensure that projects remain aligned with broader organizational goals while supporting the innovative work of research teams.

The ideal candidate will be a strategic thinker with a strong background in program management, a passion for artificial intelligence, and experience with enterprise-level platforms like Salesforce, ServiceNow, and Google Cloud.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and own the cohesive, multi-year strategic AI roadmap for our national ordering and billing platform, aligning business goals and customer needs.
  • Lead the alignment of various AI roadmaps across different platforms (including Salesforce, ServiceNow, and Google) to create a unified and synergistic strategy.
  • Drive the delivery of next-generation, AI-enabled capabilities and features from conception to launch.
  • Manage highly complex strategic initiatives with large, cross-functional teams, ensuring collaboration and alignment across the organization.
  • Interact and communicate directly with client teams, executives, and other stakeholders to provide status updates, reports, and presentations.

  • Monitor timelines and project cost to ensure adherence with approved project plans.
  • Manage the work efforts and budgets provided for third-party providers and consultants.
  • Protect project scope using change management procedures to protect against "scope creep."
  • Proactively track and manage issues, risks, and project budgets, escalating to senior management as needed to ensure mitigation.
  • Ensure that quality management standards are adhered to and that projects are completed on time, on specification, and on budget.

ย

Critical Qualifications

  • Proven experience in developing and executing strategic roadmaps, particularly with a focus on AI, machine learning, or data-driven products.
  • Highly developed organizational, leadership, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to solicit cooperation and resolve conflict.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts to a non-technical audience.
  • Strong understanding of enterprise platforms and ecosystems; direct experience with Salesforce, ServiceNow, and/or Google Cloud platforms is highly desirable.
  • Expert knowledge of Project Management Institute's (PMI) approach to Project Management.
  • PMP designation or equivalent is required.
  • University degree in a related field (e.g., Business, Computer Science, Engineering).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in the telecommunications industry, with knowledge of ordering, billing, and customer management processes for both wireline and wireless services.
  • Familiarity with Agile and other modern project management methodologies.
