As a R&D Upstream Scientist/Engineer at Lonza, you will join a dynamic and ambitious team dedicated to delivering world-class solutions to biomanufacturing challenges. Located in the beautiful Bend, OR, USA, this role offers an outstanding opportunity to contribute to groundbreaking advancements in life sciences. You will work alongside exceptionally hard-working colleagues, conducting experiments, analyzing data, and presenting results to drive innovation within the industry. What you will do:
  • Completing experiments in a mammalian bioreactor setting
  • Applying knowledge of biological, chemical, or engineering fundamentals including mass and energy conservation, heat and mass transfer, biochemistry, cell and molecular biology, and basic mathematical modeling
  • Learning and understanding how to safely operate a range of unit operations and demonstrating proficiency for achieving quality results
  • Maintaining an accurate and detailed laboratory notebook to document the execution and results of experiments
  • Collaborating with computational science teams to improve data management tools
  • Evaluating instruments, equipment, processes, and systems to improve safety, quality, and performance
  • Communicating technical information to internal teams and clients through oral and written correspondence, presentations, and reports
  • Preparing written documents such as technical memos, reports, and technology transfer documentation
  • Leading the execution of basic lab functions and suggesting operational improvements to laboratory practices

What we are looking for:
  • B.S. or equivalent experience in Chemical Engineering or Bioengineering, or B.S. or equivalent experience in Cell or Molecular Biology, or Biochemistry
  • Effective verbal and written communication abilities
  • Growth mindset
  • A strong drive to learn and contribute outside of your educational specialty
  • Previous experience in a biology lab is preferred; previous experience with mammalian cell culture is desirable
  • A bias towards collaboration
