Job description

S'more about the team:

We are seeking a Packaging Engineer II to drive the development and implementation of advanced packaging standards, enhancing both quality performance and our product portfolio. Reporting directly to the Senior Manager, Packaging Engineering, you will collaborate on and execute our strategic roadmap, create and implement comprehensive test plans, launch innovative configurations, and elevate the overall quality and reliability of our packaged deliveries. Serving as a vital member of the Packaging Engineering team, you will be instrumental in advancing quality standards, capturing cost efficiencies, and optimizing the customer experience.

Lettuce share what this role will be responsible for:

  • Work with vendors and the Procurement team to test and qualify packaging designs to expand the Packaging supply chain to enable top-line box growth.
  • Coordinate testing with an external lab and our HF US lab.
  • Manage the planning and execution of packaging testing out of the Packaging Laboratory (requiring 2 days a week working from the lab in Mississauga, ON)
  • Responsible for packaging lab upkeep and equipment calibration and maintenance
  • Oversee thermodynamic testing to validate and qualify cold chain packaging systems
  • Test packaging components and modify as necessary to meet functional parameters, cost targets, fulfillment, and shipping requirements
  • Complete and communicate test reports to Packaging Procurement team, as well as cross functionally.
  • Help provide packaging solutions to HelloFresh's innovative launch of new products, services offerings, and expansion into new categories and markets.
  • Conduct technical and scientific tests to gain further insights into packaging strategies, packaging material(s) comparison, and various other ad-hoc packaging research & development projects.
  • Redevelop and maintain our ice matrix and upsizing logic
  • Work with vendors to obtain packaging material specifications and manage internal specification process of documentation
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned

  • 2-4 years of relevant work experience in packaging engineering/science.
  • Undergraduate degree in Packaging Science, Engineering, or other relevant area of study.
  • Strong passion for packaging science
  • Proven technical expertise in packaging materials testing, most notably in ISTA-certified testing methodologies, gained through industry experience
  • Proactive, ambitious, and assertive: you take ownership of your work and think beyond the scope of a given assignment
  • An entrepreneurial mindset and a passion for solving complex problems
  • Ability to work with ambiguous or abstract concepts/information and synthesize options for HelloFresh and our management to incorporate into future decision making.
  • Excellent excel and analytical skills to create various databases and spreadsheets
  • Experience with end to end R&D and packaging innovation projects
  • General knowledge of or interest in learning more about fast-paced startup and/or the food and beverage industry
  • Ability to work in a packaging lab environment where you will be asked to lift heavy packages up to 50lbs
