The University of Miami/UHealth Department of SCCC has an exciting opportunity for a Full Time Assistant Scientist to work at the UHealth Medical Campus in Miami, FL 33136.
This individual will be responsible for the design and conduct of research into the transcriptional and epigenetic regulation of normal and malignant hematopoiesis. This individual will work independently designing, carrying out, and critiquing experiments. This individual will have sophisticated knowledge of epigenetics, molecular & cellular biology, biochemistry and mouse modeling of human cancer. He /she will be able to perform well controlled, complex laboratory assays relevant to the projects carried out in the laboratory. This person must be able to work as part of a team and work collaboratively with UM faculty, staff, postdocs and students.
CORE JOB FUNCTIONS
1. Contributes to basic and applied research activities and authors scientific publications, technical and
agency reports, and patent preparations.
2. Collaborates with senior staff to publish findings in refereed journals.
3. Creates and conducts experiments and analyzes results.
4. Works with other researchers to use and develop end products.
5. Writes extramural proposals with approval from appropriate senior staff.
6. Provides ready access to all experimental data for managing staff.
7. Requests or acquires equipment and supplies for assigned project(s).
8. Uses the Internet, surveys, legal documents, and other available sources to collect information.
9. Applies for grants to continue research and prepares materials for submission to granting agencies and
foundations.
10. Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

DEPT. SPECIFICS DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Perform complex laboratory assignments, including planning and conducting of projects related to the transcriptional and epigenetic regulation of normal and malignant hematopoiesis
  • Schedule and perform experiments in research laboratory including routine molecular biology, tissue culture, western blot, immuno-precipitation, protein expression, PCR, cloning, apoptosis assays and micro-array studies.
  • Solve problems in scientific and technical execution, interpret experimental data and maintain accurate records. May need to develop, adapt and implement new lab procedures.
  • Maintain accurate records of research findings and the analysis of results.
  • Write up experimental results for submission of manuscripts and for scientific presentations using Power Point, and other graphics software as needed.
  • Keep abreast of latest literature in the field and search for references to technical problems and keep up to date of the methods and techniques related to the specific field of research.
  • Work collaboratively within team setting with other scientists and postdoctoral associates and provide technical and scientific assistance to the lab members as appropriate.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

DEPT. SPECIFICS EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
Ph.D. or M.D. degree in Biology, Biological Sciences, Life Science and/or another related field. One-year post-doctoral experience performing non-routine and complex laboratory duties requiring advanced technical skills and proficiency. Must be able to work with minimum direct supervision and independent judgment is required. Advanced computer and English (both verbal and written) skills required.
