Job description

Christie Clinic's department of Laboratory is seeking a full-time Medical Lab Scientist/Administrative Coordinator(Sign-On Bonus Available) from Monday-Friday 8:00am-5:00pm at the University clinic. This position may require the ability to travel to other Champaign locations, as needed.

Duties include the performance of technical laboratory testing in the clinic Laboratory and responsible for the daily operations in the Laboratory in the absence of the Laboratory Manager. Certification of Medical Lab Scientist by ASCP or AMT is required.

JOB DUTIES: (This list may not include all the duties assigned.)

  • Perform technical duties as described on Medical Laboratory Scientist job description.
  • Act as general supervisor in clinical laboratory.
  • Techs, phlebotomy and lab assistants directly report to this position.
  • Communicate technical problems to Laboratory Manager.
  • Review quality control and communicate problems to Laboratory Manager in a timely manner.
  • Implement Laboratory policies and procedures.  Make recommendations for improvement and efficiencies to improve patient experience and satisfaction.
  • Ensure accurate and appropriate completion of laboratory tests.
  • Coordinate ordering and receiving of laboratory supplies within budget constraints.
  • Remedial training or continuing education needs are identified, and training provided.
  • Approve tech and/or degreed lab assistants time off requests. Adjust and approve payroll sheets in Ultipro
  • Serve as a coach to other team members in the laboratory.
  • Make recommendations for cost savings and reducing expenses including financial analysis for new instrumentation and procedures in the lab.
  • Assist with LIS maintenance tasks (Lab information System).
  • Monthly QC statistics and submission to peer review programs
  • Evaluate Quality Control
    • Input New Lot of Control
    • Establish Reference Range
    • Linearity
    • Verify Calibration
    • Assign Instrument Validation
  • Update mean on all instruments to reflect reagent lot changes or other events that could impact the performance of the QC
  • Keep track of CAP requirements (Linearity/Instrument to Instrument comparisons) are due and assign to techs.
  • Help implement and validate new tests.
  • Update all procedures as needed.
  • Assign daily work.
  • Schedule Instrument Maintenance
  • Perform related work as required.
  • Potential for travel to other lab locations.  Mileage will be reimbursed after employee submits to supervisor. 
  • Technical Supervisor role duties as specified by CLIA

CERTIFICATE/LICENSE: 

  • Certification as Medical Lab Scientist by American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP)

OR

  • Certification as Medical Lab Scientist by American Medical Technologists(AMT)

Education Requirements: 

Bachelor’s degree in science, Chemical, Physical, Biological, Clinical Laboratory Science or Medical Technology, which includes course work meeting the requirements for ASCP or AMT certification. (New graduates must provide degree/transcripts within twelve (12) weeks of hire.)

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Requirements include full range of body motion including manual and finger dexterity and hand eye coordination.  Frequent standing and walking are required for extended periods of time.  Lifting to 25 pounds may be necessary.  Visual acuity and normal color perception as well as vision correctable to 20/20 and hearing within a normal range are required. 

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

Exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, medicinal preparations, and other conditions common to a clinic environment is present.
