Southwest Virginia Community College (SWCC) offers career-training programs in numerous technical, industrial, and medical fields at a reasonable cost, going so far as to even waive tuition for certain eligible students. Located in Richlands, Virginia, Southwest offers associate degrees in such fields as business, education, general studies, liberal arts and science. These degrees are primarily intended for students who wish to transfer to a four-year university. Southwest also has associate degrees that feature programs intended to lead directly to a career in fields such as Nursing, Radiography, and Administration of Justice.
Southwest Virginia Community College is seeking applicants for a part-time Program Lab Assistant to support an ARC POWER Grant-funded workforce training initiative. This three-year position will assist faculty in delivering high-quality, hands-on instruction within skilled trades programs, with a focus on precision machining.
Position Summary
The Program Lab Assistant will support faculty in the execution of experiential, hands-on lab activities within skilled trades programs, specifically in Precision Machining and Advanced Precision Machining. This role is essential in helping ensure that lab environments are safe, organized, and conducive to student learning.
The Lab Assistant will work directly with instructors and students in both manual machining (lathe and mill) and CNC (Computer Numerical Control) environments, assisting with equipment setup, lab preparation, and student support during practical exercises.
Key Responsibilities
Lab Support & Instructional Assistance
  • Assist faculty in the preparation and delivery of hands-on lab activities in machining courses
  • Support student learning during lab sessions by reinforcing instruction and ensuring proper techniques
  • Help set up and break down lab equipment, tools, and materials

Equipment & Shop Maintenance
  • Maintain and organize machining labs, including manual and CNC equipment
  • Ensure tools, machines, and materials are available, functional, and in good condition
  • Assist with routine maintenance and troubleshooting of lab equipment

Safety & Compliance
  • Promote and enforce safe work practices in the lab environment
  • Ensure compliance with all safety regulations and procedures
  • Assist with student training on proper equipment usage and safety protocols

Program Support
  • Assist faculty with inventory management of tools, supplies, and materials
  • Support program operations and special projects as needed
  • Participate in departmental meetings or training as appropriate

Special Assignments
