Science Intern information

What is a science intern?

Science Interns are students or recent graduates who work temporarily in scientific organizations, laboratories, or research facilities to gain practical experience and foundational knowledge in a specific scientific field. Their duties often include assisting with experiments, collecting and analyzing data, and supporting research projects under the supervision of experienced scientists. This role provides an opportunity to apply classroom learning in real-world settings, develop technical and analytical skills, and explore potential career paths in science. Science internships can be found in a variety of sectors, such as academia, healthcare, biotechnology, and environmental science.

What types of projects and tasks can I expect to work on as a science intern?

As a Science Intern, you'll typically support ongoing research or development projects by assisting with data collection, conducting experiments, analyzing results, and preparing reports or presentations. You may also be asked to help maintain laboratory equipment or contribute to literature reviews. The specific tasks depend on the organization's focus, but you will often collaborate closely with scientists, researchers, and other interns, gaining valuable hands-on experience and exposure to real-world scientific processes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a science intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Science Intern, you need a solid background in scientific principles, research methods, and data analysis, often supported by ongoing or completed coursework in a relevant STEM field. Familiarity with laboratory equipment, scientific software (such as Excel, SPSS, or Python), and safety protocols is typically required. Attention to detail, curiosity, and strong communication skills help interns effectively contribute to research teams and projects. These skills and qualities are essential to ensuring accuracy, fostering innovation, and supporting the overall goals of scientific research environments.

The Business

Create your future. At WTW, our Health and Benefits business empowers large and mid-size organizations to manage rising group benefits costs, improve health outcomes, and enhance employee engagement through innovative, data-driven strategies. We deliver comprehensive solutions including creative plan design, vendor evaluation and management, pricing and funding strategies, legal compliance, and governance frameworks.

Our work is grounded in analytics and insights, enabling clients to make informed decisions that align with business goals and employee needs. In addition to core consulting services, we offer specialized expertise in clinical program design, pharmacy solutions, disability and absence management, and claims audits.

Explore an opportunity.  As a Health and Benefits Intern, you will work alongside some of the industry's top consultants while progressing toward becoming a thought leader of the future. You'll gain hands-on experience with real client assignments, where you'll be challenged to think creatively, analyze complex data, present results, and contribute to impactful programs that help employers manage costs, improve health outcomes, and elevate the employee experience. These experiences will help build your technical knowledge and overall industry expertise.
Actuarial track.  Accepted applicants will be eligible for a comprehensive exam study program, including paid study hours and exam coaching to support progress toward actuarial accreditation.
Love your work.  You will partner with consultants to provide support on projects through:

  • Supporting clients with benefit plan analysis, design, cost savings, and benchmarking
  • Performing detailed calculations throughout the benefit renewal process, including premiums and reserves, as well as assisting with pricing and employee contribution strategies and insurer negotiations
  • Analyzing and comparing vendor products, services, and contracts
  • Evaluating responses to surveys and RFPs

Role Requirements

  • Progress towards a Bachelor's or Master's degree in actuarial science, mathematics, finance or any other major with significant quantitative course work
  • Passion for solving problems and sharing solutions to exceed the standards of the client
  • Ability to be a self-starter and work independently, but also cooperatively in a close team environment
  • This is a hybrid position that requires you to be present at the WTW office in Montreal, QC, 1-2 days/week
  • For Actuarial students: Successful completion of one or more actuarial exams highly preferred
  • Work experience that demonstrates strong technical and/or client service skills (analyst-type internship preferred)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent Microsoft Office skills, particularly in Excel and PowerPoint
  • Bilingual in English and French

WTW serves a clientele with a national and international presence and must be able to offer services in French and English at all times. This position requires bilingualism, as the intern will need to provide services related to various communications exclusively in French, in addition to interacting with multiple stakeholders in Canada who speak only French.
For Universite de Montreal, UQAM and Universite Laval students, please note that we will only accept applications from August 26 to September 17, as determined in the "university recruitment for internships in actuarial science rules". For these three universities, please refer to your career services office for more information on how to apply for positions according to the posting dates.
