What is a freelance science professional?

A freelance science professional is an expert who offers scientific services or expertise on a contract or project basis, rather than being employed full-time by a single organization. These individuals might conduct research, write scientific articles, consult on scientific projects, or provide data analysis for clients in academia, industry, or publishing. Freelance science professionals often have backgrounds in fields like biology, chemistry, physics, or environmental science, and their work can vary depending on client needs. This flexible role allows them to work with multiple organizations and manage their schedules independently.

How do freelance science professionals typically find and manage projects, and what challenges might they face?

Freelance science professionals often find projects through networking, online platforms, and collaborations with academic or industry contacts. Managing multiple projects can be challenging, especially in balancing workload, meeting diverse client expectations, and handling administrative tasks like invoicing and contracts. Staying organized and maintaining clear communication with clients is essential. Additionally, freelancers must actively seek out new opportunities to ensure a steady workflow and keep their skills current in a rapidly evolving field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance science writer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance Science Writer, you need a strong background in scientific disciplines, excellent research skills, and proficiency in clear, accurate writing, typically supported by a degree in science, journalism, or a related field. Familiarity with citation management tools, content management systems, and databases such as PubMed is often expected. Strong communication, self-motivation, and the ability to meet deadlines are essential soft skills in this role. These skills ensure the delivery of credible, engaging science content for diverse audiences while maintaining professional reliability and adaptability.

About the Opportunity

We are looking for an experienced C# / WPF Developer to join a software development team working on a Windows desktop application used to configure fire detection and alarm panels.

The successful candidate will contribute to the development and evolution of a reliable, high-performance application designed for installers, technicians, and end users. This role offers the opportunity to work on a technically challenging product where software quality, usability, stability, and reliability are critical.

The ideal candidate has strong hands-on expertise in C#/.NET and WPF, combined with solid software engineering fundamentals and experience developing Windows desktop applications.

Main Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain robust features for a Windows desktop application using C#/.NET, WPF, and XAML, ensuring high performance, reliability, and maintainability.
  • Contribute to application architecture and technical design, applying object-oriented principles, design patterns, MVVM, dependency injection, and other software engineering best practices.
  • Develop intuitive user interfaces and reliable configuration components for fire detection and alarm systems, taking into account user requirements and the constraints of safety-critical products.
  • Analyze requirements, estimate development efforts, troubleshoot complex technical issues, and resolve performance, stability, compatibility, and deployment challenges.
  • Develop and maintain unit and integration tests, participate in code reviews, contribute to CI/CD and software delivery processes, and continuously improve overall product quality.
  • Collaborate within a cross-functional Agile team alongside Product, QA, Systems, Hardware, and Support teams, while documenting technical decisions and sharing knowledge with other developers.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field, with a minimum of 7 years of professional software development experience, including significant Windows desktop development.
  • Strong expertise in C# and .NET, with hands-on experience across .NET Framework and/or modern .NET versions; extensive WPF and XAML experience is essential.
  • Solid understanding of object-oriented programming, software design patterns, MVVM architecture, and dependency injection, with the ability to design clean, maintainable, and testable software.
  • Experience with relational databases and SQL, including Entity Framework, LINQ, or equivalent data-access technologies, as well as unit and integration testing practices.
  • Strong experience with Git, Agile methodologies (Scrum/Kanban), CI/CD, code reviews, and software quality practices; knowledge of C++ is considered a strong asset.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, communication, and collaboration skills, with experience in industrial, hardware-integrated, embedded, automation, IoT, real-time, high-availability, or safety-critical environments considered an asset.

Why Join This Opportunity?

You will have the opportunity to work on a mission-critical Windows desktop product where software reliability and user experience directly support fire safety systems. This is an excellent opportunity for a senior developer who wants to apply strong C#/.NET and WPF expertise to a technically challenging product within a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment.

Key technical priorities: C# / .NET and WPF.
