What is a school social worker?

School social workers are professionals who support students’ emotional, social, and academic well-being within a school setting. They help address issues such as bullying, family challenges, mental health concerns, and attendance problems. By working closely with students, families, and school staff, school social workers create strategies to improve students’ overall success and connect them with resources both in and outside of school.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a school social worker, and why are they important?

To thrive as a School Social Worker, you need a solid background in social work principles, child development, and crisis intervention, typically supported by a master's degree in social work (MSW) and relevant state licensure. Familiarity with case management systems, special education processes, and behavioral assessment tools is often required. Strong communication, cultural competence, and problem-solving abilities help build trust with students, families, and school staff. These skills and qualities are crucial for effectively supporting student well-being, promoting a positive school climate, and addressing barriers to academic success.

What are some typical challenges school social workers face when supporting students and families?

School social workers often encounter challenges such as managing high caseloads, addressing diverse student needs, and navigating complex family dynamics. They must balance providing direct support to students with coordinating services among teachers, counselors, and community agencies. Additionally, school social workers frequently advocate for students facing barriers like poverty, trauma, or mental health concerns, requiring strong communication, problem-solving, and resilience. Despite these challenges, the role offers meaningful opportunities to make a positive impact on students' academic and personal development.

Job description

Harlem Children' Zone (HCZ) - a world-renowned education and poverty-fighting organization based in New York - seeks an enthusiastic, dedicated, and mission-aligned Assistant Director for our Social Services Department with the Promise Academy Charter Schools.
The Assistant Director will bring a passion for the mission of Harlem Children's Zone: break the cycle of intergenerational poverty with comprehensive, on-the-ground programming that builds up opportunities for children and families to thrive in school, work, and life.
The Assistant Director will join the Harlem Children's Zone/Promise Academy Charter Schools Social Work Team. This team is comprised of 8 Social Workers, each assigned to one of the Promise Academy Schools. The team works closely with the Principals, Administration, and other Harlem Children's Zone entities to ensure optimal student success. The Social Work team members work to provide support and aim to help preserve families through strength-based approaches. The extent of involvement by a social worker varies and is based on many factors, including, but not limited to, the needs of the child and/or family. Team members provide school-based counseling services, assessments, crisis intervention, case management, advocacy, and referral services. The team is supervised by the Director of Social Services and is under the HCZ Wellness and Social Services umbrella.
We seek to hire an LCSW or LMSW Social Work Assistant Director for our HCZ PA school-based Social Work Team. The ideal candidate will bring a passion for the mission of Promise Academy and HCZ, an understanding and respect for the culture of all residents of Harlem, and experience working in a school setting with love for children.
