What is a school para?

School paras, short for paraprofessionals or paraeducators, are educational support staff who assist teachers in the classroom. They work closely with students, often providing additional help to those with special needs or those who require extra academic support. School paras may help with classroom management, prepare instructional materials, supervise students, and support individual or small group learning. Their role is vital in helping create an inclusive and effective educational environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a school para, and why are they important?

To thrive as a School Para, you need a high school diploma or equivalent, basic knowledge of educational practices, and experience working with children. Familiarity with classroom management tools, assistive technology, and sometimes CPR or first aid certification is often required. These skills ensure effective support for teachers and students, fostering an inclusive and productive learning environment.

They must quickly adjust to teachers' styles and classroom routines while ensuring that each student receives appropriate assistance. Collaboration and regular communication with teachers and specialists are key to overcoming these challenges and maintaining a positive learning environment.
