Job description

Job Responsibilities Conducts certified field inspections in various specialized areas. Obtains and maintains inspector certifications in these specialized areas. Ensures that all installed work meets SCDOT specifications and that the inspections are carried out and documented per SCDOT Construction Manual and Specifications.

Produces the required inspection reports and Daily Work Reports in a timely manner and ensures that they are accurate and thorough. Manages complex bridge and roadway projects to ensure that all work is performed in accordance with all SCDOT rules, regulations, specifications, and policies. Ensures that all projects are adequately inspected and that all project-related paperwork, including daily diaries, pay quantities, material samples and certifications, and monthly estimates are submitted in a timely manner.

Ensures that contractors and/or municipalities are in compliance with environmental and traffic control regulations. Achieves satisfactory scores on projects inspected by the interoffice, District Office, or Headquarters Quality Management Team. Assists with various project management functions such as completing estimates, project closeouts, audits, and change orders.

Completes survey verification and layout on road and bridge construction projects as well as preconstruction layout tasks on resurfacing projects. Work will include computing and documenting roadway and bridge grades, calculating earthwork volumes, locating and verifying foundation items, computing slopes, staking right-of- way, stationing roads, and staking guardrail. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum and Additional Requirements A bachelor's degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or Construction Science and Management; or an approved acceptable equivalence. The physical demands for the essential functions involves sitting or standing at a desk for extended periods of time. This position may require occasional travel.

May require bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, and kneeling. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside normal business hours or respond to emergency situations.
