Job Responsibilities

Assist Vehicle/Equipment Repair Tech II performing vehicle repairs on state equipment SCDOT Key Series 001 through 011. Troubleshoots vehicle electrical problems on state equipment SCDOT Key Series 001 through 011. Performs light brake repairs on state equipment SCDOT Key Series 001 through 011. Performs vehicle preventive maintenance service (level III) on state equipment SCDOT Key Series 001 through 011. Installs and repairs inclement weather equipment (i.e. snow plows, sand/salt spreaders). Answers service calls in the field to tractor mowers, dump trucks, and equipment. Checks fuel, water and lubricating oil levels to ensure that all engines and equipment are properly serviced. Perform small engine repairs (i.e. handheld equipment ) on state equipment of simple or medium complexity. Ensures that all hazardous waste and materials are properly stored and/or disposed of as per DHEC regulations. Containers must be properly labeled, and shop and working area are well cleaned. Performs small engine repairs (i.e., handheld equipment) on state equipment of simple or medium complexity. Assists in shop operations during inclement weather. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum and Additional Requirements
Six (6) months of work experience that is directly related to the area of employment; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Completion of one (1) academic year of a South Carolina High School Automotive Technology or Diesel Engine curriculum may substitute for six (6) months of directly-related experience. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
Physical Requirement: The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires working in a large garage setting and may perform duties in an uncomfortable position for long periods of time. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
