Interstate Waste Services is the most progressive and innovative provider of solid waste and recycling services in the country! We primarily service Northern New Jersey, Southern New York State, New York City, with a landfill located in Ohio, where we also own and operate a state-of-the-art rail-served landfill. We cater to a diverse range of residential, industrial, and commercial customers. Essential Job Summary:

The Scale Operator will be mainly responsible for weighing in and weight out solid waste vehicles from both company drivers and third-party vendors/haulers. They will oversee receiving payments, checking loads, and always ensuring the safety of the landfill and scale. 

Essential Job Functions: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Other minor duties may be assigned.
  • Serve as first point of contact for any drivers, customers, or other traffic at the scale house 
  • Accurately calculate and process payments, weights and other measurements 
  • Verify incoming loads do not contain any unnecessary or inappropriate material 
  • Various administrative tasks including regular filing, data entry and reporting 
  • Provide general upkeep of the scale house 
  • Additional duties as assigned. 
  • Outbound materials schedule
  • Hourly outbound material quantity verification
  • Constant Communication and schedule update with End markets and haulers.
  • Compliance with NJDEP regulations
  • Completing and emailing daily activity reports
  • Daily update of reciprocation report and schedule trash loads for the following day to maintain a balance of +/- 20 tons per reciprocating county.

Work Environment: Scale Operator 

  • This Scale Operator will be based out of our MRF facility located in Newark NJ
  • This shift will be a position starting at 4:00am to 12:00pm with possible rotation from 8:00am to 5:00pm. Saturday 6:00am - 2:00pm (Saturday will rotate among all scale operators on weekly basis)
  • Daily exposure to physical environment including odors, loud noises, weather elements, etc. 
Requirements and Qualifications:
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and legally eligible to work in the United States. 
  • High school/GED education completed; higher education is a plus. 
  • Minimum 2 years of warehouse environment experience. 
  • Experience from the sanitation industry is strongly preferred. 
  • Experience working with scales is strongly preferred. 
  • Working knowledge of general computer skills. 
  • Consistently capable of working independently to safely analyze and resolve problems. 
  • Fluency in English required, Spanish bilingual is a plus.
