How much do scale microgrids jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 9, 2026, the average hourly pay for scale microgrids in the United States is $17.80, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $15.38 and $19.71 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in scale microgrids, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in scale microgrids often encounter challenges such as integrating various renewable energy sources, managing grid stability, and coordinating with multiple stakeholders like utilities, regulators, and local communities. Effective communication skills, adaptability, and a solid understanding of both technical and regulatory aspects are essential to overcome these hurdles. Collaboration with cross-functional teams, continuous learning about emerging technologies, and proactive problem-solving are key strategies to address these challenges and ensure smooth project implementation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Scale Microgrids Engineer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Scale Microgrids Engineer, you need expertise in electrical engineering, energy systems, and renewable technologies, typically backed by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with simulation software (such as HOMER or ETAP), power system modeling, and relevant certifications like Professional Engineer (PE) or NABCEP are often required. Strong project management, problem-solving, and communication skills help you collaborate effectively and manage complex projects. These abilities are vital to designing, optimizing, and implementing reliable microgrid solutions that meet sustainability and efficiency goals.

What are scale microgrids?

Scale microgrids are localized energy systems that can operate independently or in conjunction with the main power grid, but at a larger or more complex scale than typical small microgrids. They are designed to serve a broader range of energy needs, often incorporating multiple distributed energy resources like solar, wind, batteries, and backup generators. Scale microgrids are commonly used in commercial, industrial, or community settings to improve energy reliability, reduce costs, and support sustainability goals. These systems can provide backup power during outages, manage energy loads, and help integrate renewable energy sources. As energy systems modernize, scale microgrids play a key role in enhancing grid resilience and flexibility.

What is the difference between Scale Microgrids vs Microgrid Project Engineer?

AspectScale MicrogridsMicrogrid Project Engineer
CredentialsEngineering degree, certifications in renewable energy or microgridsEngineering degree, project management certifications often preferred
Work EnvironmentDesign, planning, and overseeing large-scale microgrid projectsImplementing, coordinating, and managing specific microgrid projects
Industry UsageUsed by energy companies, utilities, and large-scale developersEmployed by engineering firms, contractors, and project teams

Scale Microgrids focus on designing and deploying large-scale microgrid systems, often involving multiple sites and complex infrastructure. Microgrid Project Engineers work on specific projects, managing technical aspects and ensuring successful implementation. Both roles require technical expertise, but Scale Microgrids typically involve broader strategic planning, while Microgrid Project Engineers focus on project execution.

Job description

The Role

We are looking for a Senior Project Engineer to provide comprehensive applications/project engineering support for our distributed energy and microgrid projects. Our projects typically include managing a variety of DER and microgrid assets such as solar, energy storage, controls, and reciprocating engines. ย

You will report to our VP of Project Engineering and Preconstruction and will work a hybrid schedule out of one of our offices in Ridgewood, NJ, NYC, Oakland, CA, or Santa Monica, CA.ย

Key responsibilities will include:
  • Utilize your strong technical and communication skills to interface with all aspects of the business and customers.
  • Work extensively with our execution (project management) team to deliver turn-key solutions for our customers within budget and per schedule.
  • Work with the business development, execution, and commercial teams on specific projects to ensure the integration of the microgrid is technically correct, practical, and cost-effective. This includes working with existing service entrance one-line drawings or creating new ones, to provide the best design interface for functionality and cost.
  • Investigate the interconnection, which includes modifications to existing design concepts that are applicable for each site.
  • Work with switchgear manufacturers and other equipment OEMs to develop innovative designs and costing that are scalable to many jobs and customer sites. This includes working at voltage levels of 23kV, 3.8kV, 4.16kV, 480V, and 208V, depending on site and system size.
  • Provide significant input to the solar, battery, and generator designs to optimize performance, reliability, and sustainability for each customer site.
  • Directly manage engineering consultants in the preparation of detailed engineering and construction drawings and specifications for 30%, 60%, 90% Issue for Permit, and 100% Issue for Construction drawing packages.
The Ideal Candidate
  • 7+ years of experience in the design and construction of power/generation/renewable energy projects
  • Thorough technical understanding of distributed energy technologies, including some combination of solar, battery, and reciprocating engines/turbines
  • Understanding of rotating power with reciprocating engines in the 200 to 2000 kW size range per engine. This includes parallel operation with the utility as well as with other DERs, both in grid parallel and island mode operations.ย
  • Solid understanding of the utility side of the interconnection.
  • Knowledge of the various DER power sources within the Microgrid and how they best interface with the utility to provide the most efficient system.
  • Knowledge of emissions from the utility side, as well as each of the DERs.ย
  • Knowledge of systems controls for all the DERs and how they can be utilized to accomplish specific operating goals while part of the Microgrid. These goals provide economic return to the customer and us.
  • Experience in submitting interconnection applications, reviewing Utility studies, which may include Detailed Studies, Facility Studies, and System Impact Studies.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to communicate with technical and non-technical people to make projects work.
