Duties:
  • The SCADA Technician is responsible for testing, validating, and troubleshooting SCADA telemetry, point mapping, and communications paths.
  • This role ensures that RTU, IED, and field device data integrates correctly into the SCADA system and operates reliably in support of grid operations.
  • The technician works closely with engineering, operations, and IT teams to ensure accurate telemetry, alarms, control functions, visualization, and system performance.
  • This position reports to the Grid Applications Manager our company in Jackson, MI and will require completion of a personal risk assessment, NERC CIP training, and FERC SOC training.
  • The position is required to report on site as job responsibilities cannot be completed remotely.

Job Description/Responsibilities
  • Perform SCADA head‑end point-to-point checkout, validating digital status, analog values, alarms, controls, transducer scaling, and sequence-of-events accuracy.
  • Verify point mapping, naming conventions, database entries, and telemetry configurations within the SCADA master system.
  • Validate RTU and IED logic, communication mappings, and data files against engineering documentation and design standards.
  • Troubleshoot issues related to data mapping errors, scaling discrepancies, communication failures, stale data, incorrect alarms, or control performance.
  • Conduct SCADA communication testing for DNP3, Modbus, and other supported protocols over serial or IP networks.
  • Document test results, discrepancies, resolutions, and final checkout/commissioning reports for operational acceptance.
  • Coordinate closely with IT, SCADA Engineering, field resources and third parties, Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) teams during device onboarding and commissioning activities.
  • Ensure compliance with utility safety rules, NERC/CIP security requirements, IT policies, and Information Security policies.
  • Act as an escalation point for telemetry availability and communication issues.
  • Work with other teams in support of scheduled maintenance of field device(s) and communications systems.
  • Participate in weekly scheduling meetings with field resources.
  • May participate in storm restoration efforts as needed.

Skills:
  • Familiar with SCADA communication protocols (DNP, IEC 61850, Modbus) and SCADA telemetry systems using IP networking.
  • Working knowledge of RTU/IED platforms such as SEL, Cooper/Eaton, GE, NovaTech, or ABB.
  • Familiar with NERC Compliance requirements.
  • Familiar with supporting and maintaining HMI one-line displays and other real-time displays.
  • Ability to identify patterns and use problem-solving skills to create a solution to chronic issues.
  • Ability to identify process gaps and suggest process enhancement, decommissioning, and/or creation.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and manage multiple tasks with shifting priorities.
  • Knowledge and/or experience in utility operations.
  • Strong communication through all mediums.
  • Exceptional ability to discern urgency, importance, and priority.
  • Must be self-motivated and organized.
  • Strong problem solving and decision-making skills, especially in a stressful environment.
  • Ability to work and contribute in a team environment.
  • Electrical power and/or controls background is preferred.

Education:
  • A two-year associate degree in an Electrical/Electronic Technology, IT/Networking, scientific/technical field OR applicable experience such as trade schools, military programs, etc
