What is an SBIR?

SBIR stands for Small Business Innovation Research. It is a competitive program that encourages small businesses in the United States to engage in federal research and development with the potential for commercialization. Through SBIR, small companies can receive funding in phases to develop innovative technologies that meet federal needs, while retaining intellectual property rights to their inventions. The program helps bridge the gap between basic science and marketable products or services.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an SBIR program manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as an SBIR Program Manager, you need expertise in research and development project management, grant administration, and a strong understanding of federal funding processes, typically supported by a relevant STEM degree and experience in innovation-driven environments. Familiarity with grant management software, SBIR application systems, and compliance tools is essential. Strong interpersonal skills, strategic thinking, and the ability to communicate complex ideas clearly make someone stand out in this position. These skills ensure efficient program oversight, successful funding allocation, and effective support for innovative small businesses navigating the SBIR process.
