Job description

Position Summary

The SBA Portfolio Manager is responsible for the ongoing management, monitoring, and performance of a portfolio of SBA-guaranteed loans. This role ensures compliance with SBA regulations, internal credit policies, and prudent risk management practices while supporting small business clients throughout the life of their loans. The SBA Portfolio Manager partners closely with Relationship Managers, SBA Underwriters, Loan Operations, and internal/external auditors to maintain a healthy, compliant, and profitable SBA loan portfolio.


Key Responsibilities

Portfolio Management & Monitoring

  • Oversee the full life cycle of SBA 7(a) and 504 loans after closing, ensuring ongoing compliance with SBA SOP requirements.
  • Monitor borrowing relationships for financial performance, covenant compliance, and proper collateral maintenance.
  • Conduct periodic portfolio reviews, spreading financials as needed, and identify early warning indicators.
  • Manage past-due, deferred, or impaired credits by coordinating with internal stakeholders to mitigate risk.

SBA Compliance & Servicing

  • Ensure proper servicing actions and documentation in accordance with the SBA SOP, including but not limited to:
    • Post-closing modifications
    • Collateral changes
    • Assumption requests
    • Subordination/standby agreements
  • Prepare and submit required SBA reporting, including 1502 reporting, modifications, and servicing requests via CAFS/ETran as needed.
  • Maintain accurate and timely loan file documentation for internal and SBA audits.

Risk Management

  • Identify trends or risks within the SBA portfolio and recommend corrective action.
  • Support special assets or workout teams on challenged SBA credits; assist with guaranty repairs or purchase requests.
  • Ensure adherence to internal credit policies and SBA requirements for ongoing servicing, monitoring, and liquidation (if applicable).

Client & Internal Partner Support

  • Serve as a point of contact for borrower servicing requests and SBA-related inquiries.
  • Partner with Relationship Managers on renewals, modifications, and borrower follow-up.
  • Collaborate with Loan Operations to ensure timely and accurate booking, servicing, and reporting.
  • Provide guidance to colleagues on SBA SOP interpretations and best practices.

Audit & Reporting

  • Prepare portfolio metrics, delinquency reports, and risk assessments for management as required.
  • Assist with internal audits, external audits, and SBA on-site reviews.
  • Maintain strong documentation and controls to ensure portfolio integrity and institutional compliance.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Business, Finance, Accounting, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 3โ€“5+ years of SBA lending, portfolio management, credit analysis, or related commercial banking experience.
  • Strong knowledge of SBA SOP requirements (current 7(a) and 504 regulations).

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong credit analysis and financial statement interpretation skills.
  • High attention to detail, strong organizational ability, and disciplined follow-through.
  • Excellent communication skills for working with clients and internal teams.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
