What is the difference between Satellite Rf Engineer vs Satellite Communications Technician?

AspectSatellite Rf EngineerSatellite Communications Technician
CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical Engineering or related, RF certificationsTechnical diploma or associate degree, RF and satellite training
Work EnvironmentDesign, testing, and troubleshooting RF systems in labs or fieldInstallation, maintenance, and repair of satellite systems on-site
Industry UsageDesign and optimize satellite RF systems for telecom, defense, or spaceOperate and maintain satellite communication equipment for service providers

Satellite Rf Engineers focus on designing and testing RF systems, while Satellite Communications Technicians handle installation and maintenance. Both roles require RF knowledge but differ in responsibilities and work settings.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Satellite RF Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Satellite RF Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, with expertise in radio frequency (RF) theory, satellite communications, and often a relevant degree. Familiarity with RF simulation software (like CST or HFSS), spectrum analyzers, network analyzers, and industry certifications such as FCC licensing are typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork enhance success in this role. These skills and qualifications ensure reliable satellite communication systems and efficient troubleshooting in a highly technical, mission-critical environment.

What are Satellite RF Engineers?

Satellite RF Engineers are specialists who design, develop, test, and maintain radio frequency (RF) systems used in satellite communications. They are responsible for ensuring reliable transmission and reception of signals between satellites and ground stations, often working with antennas, transmitters, receivers, and other RF components. Their expertise is crucial for enabling services such as satellite TV, internet, navigation, and remote sensing. Satellite RF Engineers also troubleshoot signal issues, optimize system performance, and comply with regulatory standards.

What are some common challenges Satellite RF Engineers face when working on satellite communication systems?

Satellite RF Engineers often encounter challenges related to signal interference, atmospheric attenuation, and ensuring reliable communication links over long distances. Dealing with strict regulatory standards and coordinating frequency allocations is also part of the role. Additionally, troubleshooting hardware in remote or space-based environments can require creative solutions and close collaboration with cross-functional teams such as system integration and network operations.

Job description

A growing space-focused communications company is hiring a Lunar Network Systems Engineer for a full-time role based in the Denver, CO area. This opportunity sits at the intersection of satellite communications, cloud networking, and modern infrastructure, with exposure to technologies such as Cisco networking, SD-WAN, AWS, Linux systems, and infrastructure-as-code tools like Ansible and AWX. The team is expanding due to increasing demand tied to next-generation satellite and lunar communications programs.
This role stands out because it is not a typical desk-based network engineering position. The team is looking for someone who can operate both in the field and in a systems environment, supporting real-world deployments of ground station infrastructure. You’ll work on globally distributed networks that support satellite communications, including hands-on integration of RF and network equipment at remote sites. The environment is small, highly collaborative, and high visibility, where each engineer plays a critical role in mission success. This is a strong fit for someone early to mid-career with specialized experience in satcom who wants to grow quickly while working on impactful, cutting-edge projects.
Required Skills & Experience
  • 3 to 7 years of network or systems engineering experience
  • Hands-on experience working in satellite communications or ground station environments
  • Strong understanding of routing and switching concepts including VLANs and subnetting
  • Experience with SD-WAN technologies
  • Knowledge of network security practices including segmentation and secure access
  • Experience deploying or supporting infrastructure in remote or field environments
  • Ability to rack, stack, and cable network and RF-related equipment independently
  • Exposure to Linux systems and command line interfaces
  • Familiarity with infrastructure as code concepts using tools such as Ansible, AWX, or Terraform
  • Ability to obtain a clearance
Desired Skills & Experience
  • Experience working with RF equipment, modems, or baseband systems
  • Background collaborating with RF or communications engineers
  • Familiarity with AWS or cloud-based networking environments
  • Scripting experience using Python or Bash
  • Experience with network automation and configuration management
  • Data center or lab environment experience
  • Experience supporting global or multi-site network deployments
What You Will Be Doing
Tech Breakdown
  • 40% Networking including routing, switching, SD-WAN, and security
  • 30% Systems, Linux, and cloud infrastructure
  • 30% Field engineering and hardware deployment
Daily Responsibilities
  • 70% Hands-on engineering and deployment work
  • 30% Team collaboration and coordination
The Offer
  • Bonus eligible
You will receive the following benefits:
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Vacation time
  • Bonus eligibility
Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the US on a full-time basis now and in the future.
