The Microbiology Specialist supports efficient operations of the Corporate Microbiology Laboratory, located at the Sargento Foods Elkhart Lake facility. This position will conduct basic microbiology and environmental pathogen testing, as well as aid in the consolidation of all microbiological testing from all plant locations into the Corporate Microbiology Laboratory.

What You Do.

  • Ensures Sargento Foods Inc. (SFI) products and facilities meet safety, quality, and legal standards through monitoring and execution of QA policies, including accurate record-keeping.

  • Conducts microbiological tests and verifies critical process parameters to uphold food safety systems, complying with testing SOPs and specifications.

  • Serves as a technical resource to various departments, applying knowledge of customer expectations and regulatory requirements.

  • Takes lead in specific laboratory programs and manages projects with minimal supervision, applying quality tools and approaches to collect, evaluate data, and provide support on continuous improvement projects.

  • Applies quality tools and approaches (e.g., root cause analysis, pareto charting, process mapping, cause and effect diagramming, etc.). Collects and evaluates data and writes reports to document deviations from existing programs. Has an understanding of tracking, trending, and data analysis tools.

  • Assists in writing, communication and training of Quality and Food Safety Systems Programs and standard operating procedures.

  • Performs administrative duties, maintains a clean work environment, coordinates courier services, and supports student work-based learning opportunities.   

Your Education and Experience. 

  • An Associate Degree is required for this position. A Bachelor’s degree in a Biological Science or chemistry with college-level course work in Microbiology strongly preferred.

  • 1-3 years of previous experience in an approved laboratory/QA environment required.

  • Valid Driver’s License required for travel among Sargento facilities for sample collection. 

  • PCQI Certification preferred.
