SAP security and authorization involve managing user access rights within SAP systems to ensure data protection and compliance. Proper authorization management is essential for safeguarding sensitive information and maintaining system integrity.

What are SAP Security Authorization roles?

SAP Security Authorization roles are sets of permissions that control what actions users can perform and what data they can access within SAP systems. These roles are assigned to users to ensure that they can only access the functions and information necessary for their job, helping to maintain data security and compliance. Roles can be customized to fit the specific needs of an organization and are managed by SAP security administrators. Properly configuring authorization roles is critical for protecting sensitive business data and preventing unauthorized access.

What are some common challenges faced by SAP Security Authorization professionals when managing user access and roles?

SAP Security Authorization professionals often encounter challenges in balancing strict security requirements with users' need for system access. One common issue is ensuring that users have the appropriate permissions for their job functions without granting excessive access, which can lead to segregation of duties (SoD) conflicts. Additionally, regularly updating and auditing user roles as organizational needs evolve can be complex, requiring close collaboration with business process owners and IT teams. Staying current with compliance standards and effectively communicating technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders are also key aspects of the role.

Will AI replace SAP security jobs?

AI is unlikely to fully replace SAP security authorization roles, as these jobs require complex decision-making, understanding of business processes, and access management expertise. Instead, AI tools are expected to assist security professionals by automating routine tasks and enhancing threat detection. SAP security specialists will continue to be essential for designing, implementing, and maintaining secure access controls within organizations.

  • Employment Type: Full-Time

Department: Professional Services – SAP Security Practice

    About the Role

Markgraf Consulting is seeking an experienced SAP Security Senior Consultant to join our growing SAP Security and Compliance practice. In this role, you’ll lead the design, implementation, and governance of SAP security across enterprise landscapes — including ECC, S/4HANA, BW, and Fiori systems.

You’ll work directly with client stakeholders, auditors, and technical teams to ensure secure, compliant, and efficient SAP environments. This is a client-facing position with meaningful responsibility for shaping security architectures, guiding project workstreams, and mentoring junior consultants.

    Key Responsibilities

Lead SAP role design and access control strategy across multiple systems (ECC, S/4HANA, BW/4HANA, Fiori).

Perform SoD (Segregation of Duties) analysis and remediation, leveraging SAP GRC or equivalent tools.

Conduct user provisioning, authorization reviews, and access audits.

Define and implement SAP security governance, standards, and documentation.

Partner with audit teams to support SOX, ITGC, and compliance testing.

Troubleshoot complex authorization and access issues across modules and environments.

Collaborate with SAP Basis, Functional, and Infrastructure teams on system projects and upgrades.

Mentor junior consultants and contribute to internal security frameworks, templates, and knowledge sharing.

Stay current on SAP and cybersecurity trends, GRC tool capabilities, and cloud-based access models.

    What You Bring

5+ years of hands-on SAP security experience across multiple landscapes.

Strong understanding of SAP authorization concepts, composite and derived role design, and user administration.

Demonstrated experience with SoD frameworks, risk analysis, and compliance reporting.

Experience working with SAP GRC Access Control (ARA, ARM, BRM, EAM).

Excellent communication skills and the ability to translate technical findings into business language.

Proven success leading security workstreams or client engagements.

    Preferred Qualifications

Experience supporting audit remediation or compliance initiatives (SOX, GDPR, PCI-DSS).

Familiarity with Fiori, HANA DB security, and cloud integration (Azure, GCP, AWS).

Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, or related field.

Relevant SAP or security certifications (e.g., SAP Certified Technology Associate, CISA, CISSP, or Security+).
