Qualified applicants must be current county employees and have completed the equivalent of six months of continuous service following a regular appointment in the Alameda County classified service by Tuesday, June 23, 2026. A regular appointment does not include provisional, TAP (Temporary Assignment Pool), or STEP-UP appointments.

DESCRIPTION
ABOUT THE ALAMEDA COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE
The Alameda County Sheriff's Office is a full-service law enforcement agency accredited through the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) for its law enforcement services, its Regional Training Center, and its Dispatch Unit; the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors Laboratory Accreditation Board for its Crime Lab; the Bomb Squad Commanders Advisory Board for its Explosive Ordinance Unit. Additionally, the agency's health care provider, Wellpath, has experience working with the National Commission on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC).
The Sheriff's Office has a current budget of approximately $600 million and has over 1600 authorized positions, including in excess of 1000 sworn personnel. The agency's Chief Executive Officer is Sheriff / Coroner Yesenia L. Sanchez, who is assisted in the operation of the agency by Undersheriff April Luckett-Fahimi, Assistant Sheriffs Daniel McNaughton and Pace Stokes.
The Sheriff of Alameda County is responsible for a vast array of tasks and duties, including the following:

• Providing security to the Consolidated Superior Courts
• Operating the Coroner's Bureau
• Operating full-service criminalistics laboratory
• Performing Civil Process
• Operating a County Jail (Santa Rita)
• Operating the County Office of Emergency Services
• Providing patrol and investigative services to the unincorporated areas of Alameda County
• Pursuant to contractual agreements, providing patrol and investigative services to the City of Dublin, Oakland International Airport, Highland County Hospital, Social Services, and to the Alameda-Contra Costa Transit District

THE POSITION
The Sergeant classification represents the first level of supervision or specialist in the peace officer series. Under direction, Sergeants investigate violations of law or, supervise an assigned detail of subordinates in routine patrol activities, in detention and corrections duties, in civil process duties, or in varied criminal justice assignments; or, coordinate emergency services preparedness programs and volunteer activities; and to do related work as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Experience:
Candidates must have completed their probationary period as a member of the Alameda County Sheriff's Office and possess the following:
Either I
The equivalent of three years' full-time continuous experience as a Deputy Sheriff I/II in the Alameda County classified service. (Non-classified includes District Attorney's Office, Hospital Authority, and the Consolidated Courts.)
Or II
The equivalent of five years' full-time California law enforcement experience, which must include a minimum of two years as a Deputy Sheriff I/II in the Alameda County Sheriff's Office and possession of an Advanced Certificate issued by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training.
License:
Possession of a valid California State Motor Vehicle Operator's license.
Special Requirement:
Federal law and County policy requires that certain positions in the class of Sergeant which require a commercial driver's license and the performance of duties defined as "safety sensitive" are subject to post-offer/pre-placement/pre-duty, reasonable suspicion, post-accident, random, return-to-duty and follow-up drug and alcohol testing.
NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.

EXAMINATION COMPONENTS
The examination will consist of the following steps:

Review for Minimum Qualifications: Completed by Tuesday, July 7, 2026.

Written Examination: Week of July 21, 2026
A written test which will be qualifying only (pass/fail). Applicants who pass the written test will move forward to the next step of the examination process, an assessment center.
Candidate Orientation: Friday, July 31, 2026, at 2:00 PM, via Microsoft Teams
This orientation provides applicants information on the upcoming assessment center. Although not mandatory, applicants are encouraged to attend the orientation. Note: Only applicants who pass the written examination will move on to the assessment center.
Assessment Center: Week of August 17, 2026
Applicants who pass the written examination will be invited to participate in an assessment center. The assessment center score will be weighted as 100% of the candidate's final examination score.
