What is a sanitation worker?

Sanitation workers are professionals responsible for collecting, handling, and disposing of waste and recyclables from homes, businesses, and public spaces. They play a crucial role in maintaining cleanliness and public health in communities by ensuring that garbage is removed efficiently and safely. Their duties often include operating garbage trucks, sorting recyclables, and sometimes cleaning streets or public areas. Sanitation workers are essential to preventing the spread of disease and keeping environments safe and pleasant for everyone.

What does a sanitation worker do?

The duties of a sanitation worker vary based on the type of position. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, sanitation work is divided into several categories, including garbage and recycling collection, waste remediation, and materials recovery. If you are a garbage or recycling collector or haul waste, your main responsibilities are to drive a truck on a pre-assigned route to empty trash and recycling bins or to haul away large items. Sanitation workers who work at water treatment centers or facilities that handle sewage operate equipment designed to collect, clean, treat, and sterilize water so that it is sanitary enough to be returned to the water supply or used in agriculture or land management.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a sanitation worker, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Sanitation Worker, you need physical stamina, attention to safety, and a high school diploma or equivalent, with some roles requiring a valid driver's license. Familiarity with waste collection vehicles, compactors, and basic maintenance tools is often necessary. Reliability, teamwork, and a strong work ethic help individuals excel in this position. These skills and qualities ensure efficient waste management, a safe work environment, and the cleanliness of communities.

What are some common challenges faced by sanitation workers and how are they addressed on the job?

Sanitation workers often encounter challenges such as exposure to hazardous materials, inclement weather conditions, and heavy physical demands. To address these, employers typically provide comprehensive safety training, personal protective equipment (PPE), and enforce strict safety protocols. Teams often work in pairs or groups to ensure tasks are completed efficiently and safely, and regular breaks are scheduled to prevent fatigue. Open communication and supportive supervisors also help resolve issues quickly and maintain a safe work environment.

A strong understanding of pathogens and food safety risk is essential to this role, as the Sanitation Manager serves as the frontline defense against contamination in a ready-to-eat food environment. This role matters because a clean, compliant plant protects both our customers and F&S's reputation for quality and safety. The ideal candidate has built or managed a sanitation or production team before, is comfortable leading a diverse group of employees through the overnight shift, and brings hands-on food and beverage manufacturing experience, ideally within ready-to-eat products.

What You'll Own

  • Lead, schedule, and directly supervise the 3rd shift sanitation team to ensure the plant is fully cleaned and sanitized before release to production
  • Apply strong pathogen and food safety knowledge to identify contamination risks and ensure effective cleaning and sanitizing of the entire production area
  • Build, coach, and develop a cohesive overnight sanitation team, using recognition, feedback, and hands-on training to drive performance
  • Ensure full compliance with HACCP, GMP, SOP, and SSOP requirements, and maintain accurate, timely documentation
  • Manage safe use, handling, and disposal of sanitation chemicals, tools, and equipment in accordance with company policy
  • Coordinate with the QA Manager and plant leadership to report and resolve food safety issues
  • Maintain sanitation supply inventory and rotate stock as needed
  • Promote a strong safety culture, enforce proper PPE use, and ensure timely reporting and investigation of injuries or near-misses

Requirements:

What You Bring

  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent education
  • 3-5 years of experience in a food and beverage manufacturing or warehouse environment, ready-to-eat (RTE) experience strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to build or manage a team, with a track record of leading employees across shifts
  • HACCP certification highly preferred; Food Handling or Culinary Arts certification also a plus
  • Strong working knowledge of pathogens, food-borne illness, and contamination risk in a food production setting
  • Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Excellent verbal communication skills, with the ability to build cooperative working relationships at all levels of the organization
  • Ability to work overnight (3rd shift) in a cold/damp environment and stand for extended periods; bilingual English/Spanish is a plus

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee primarily works in a chilled factory or warehouse environment with prolonged standing and walking. Regularly required to stand, walk, reach, grab, carry items, talk, or hear, with frequent use of hands to finger, handle, lift, or feel. Regularly exposed to chilled temperatures. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
