Job description

Position Summary

Acuren Wind is looking for an experienced Geotechnical Driller to join our growing team in Calgary, Alberta.

This position supports the organization at the service line level. Reporting to the Division Manager, the position will be responsible for independently planning, executing, and supervising subsurface drilling and sampling operations to support geotechnical and environmental investigations. The role requires a strong focus on customer support, project management, technical compliance, and safety leadership.

Responsibilities
  • Lead and execute geotechnical and environmental drilling programs using a variety of drilling methods (e.g., auger, rotary, sonic, CPT, or coring).
  • Coordinate project logistics, site access, and daily schedules to ensure efficient project delivery.
  • Communicate directly with clients, project managers, and field staff to clarify technical requirements, timelines, and deliverables.
  • Oversee and mentor Driller Assistants, ensuring proper training, task delegation, and adherence to safety procedures.
  • Collect, log, and document soil, rock, and groundwater samples in accordance with project specifications and applicable standards (ASTM, CSA).
  • Maintain compliance with environmental, safety, and regulatory frameworks, including documentation of permits, inspections, and field reporting.
  • Operate and maintain drilling equipment, vehicles, and tooling in accordance with manufacturer and company protocols.
  • Manage field records, sample custody, and data quality assurance.
  • Identify and mitigate operational risks, ensuring safe and environmentally responsible work practices.
  • Support bid preparation, cost tracking, and field reporting to support project financial performance.
  • Other duties as assigned
Requirements

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Advanced technical knowledge of drilling techniques, geotechnical sampling, and site investigation principles.
  • Strong understanding of field safety practices and environmental compliance requirements.
  • Effective communication skills for coordinating with internal teams and external clients.
  • Project management proficiency, including planning, scheduling, and budget awareness.
  • Demonstrated leadership and mentoring abilities.
  • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making under field conditions.
  • Mechanical aptitude for troubleshooting drilling and support equipment.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to procedural accuracy.
  • Proficiency with digital field reporting tools and mobile data entry applications.

EDUCATION:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; post-secondary technical or trade certification in geotechnical, drilling, or environmental technology preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in geotechnical or environmental drilling operations.
  • Valid Class 3 or Class 1 Driver's License desired (air brake endorsement preferred).
  • Certification in First Aid, H2S Alive, WHMIS, and Ground Disturbance considered assets.

Working Conditions
  • Field-based role requiring frequent travel and extended hours during peak project periods.
  • Regular exposure to outdoor conditions including heat, cold, noise, and uneven terrain.
