Sampling Assistant information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Sampling Assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Sampling Assistant, you need attention to detail, organizational skills, and a basic understanding of sampling procedures, often supported by a high school diploma or relevant experience. Familiarity with data entry software, sample tracking systems, and laboratory equipment is typically required. Strong communication, teamwork, and time management skills help ensure smooth coordination with colleagues and accurate sample handling. These competencies are vital for maintaining data integrity, ensuring efficient workflow, and upholding quality standards in sampling processes.

What are Sampling Assistants?

Sampling Assistants are professionals who help collect, prepare, and sometimes analyze samples for research or quality control purposes. They work in a variety of fields, including environmental science, food production, pharmaceuticals, and market research. Their main responsibilities often include gathering samples according to strict protocols, labeling and recording data, and ensuring samples are stored and transported correctly. Sampling Assistants play a crucial role in ensuring that the data collected is accurate and reliable for further analysis.

What is the difference between Sampling Assistant vs Laboratory Technician?

AspectSampling AssistantLaboratory Technician
Required CredentialsHigh school diploma or equivalent; some roles may require certifications in sampling or safety proceduresAssociate degree or diploma in laboratory technology or related field; certifications may be preferred
Work EnvironmentField sites, outdoor locations, or client premises for sample collectionLaboratory setting, handling samples, conducting tests, and recording data
Employer & Industry UsageEnvironmental, construction, or manufacturing industries for sample collectionHealthcare, research, environmental testing, and quality control labs

The Sampling Assistant primarily focuses on collecting samples from various sites, often working outdoors or in the field. In contrast, the Laboratory Technician handles analyzing samples within a lab environment. Both roles require related certifications and are essential in industries like environmental testing and manufacturing, but their work settings and responsibilities differ significantly.

What are some common challenges a Sampling Assistant may face when collecting and handling samples in the field?

Sampling Assistants often encounter challenges such as maintaining sample integrity during transportation, following precise protocols to avoid contamination, and managing logistics in varying weather or environmental conditions. Effective communication with laboratory staff and adherence to safety procedures are also essential to ensure reliable results. Being detail-oriented and adaptable can help overcome these challenges and contribute to the overall success of the sampling process.

Job description

Description
The McDevitt Laboratory within the Bioengineering Institute and the Department of Molecular Pathobiology at New York University is seeking a full-time Assistant ResearchScientist to support the development of AI-linked cytology diagnostic technologies.
Background
The McDevitt Lab has led innovations in the creation and validation of lab-on-a-chip diagnostic platforms that integrate microfluidics, cytology, and artificial intelligence. These technologies are designed to enable early disease detection and precision oncology care by digitizing biological information at the single-cell level. We are now expanding our efforts to build large clinical databases essential for AI-based diagnostic model development.
The successful candidate will work closely with an interdisciplinary team of scientists, clinicians, and engineers to support cytology testing, method development, and data generation critical to advancing these next-generation diagnostic tools.
Responsibilities
  • Design and carry out hypothesis-driven experiments to support technology and product development
  • Execute and validate cytology-based assays, focusing on the processing and analysis of clinical samples
  • Assist in building a large, high-quality clinical database for training AI diagnostic models
  • Generate technical documents, including requirements, specifications, test plans, and experimental reports
  • Validate test methods, ensuring robustness, reproducibility, and compliance with established protocols
  • Perform cell staining, imaging, and image-based cytology measurements
  • Analyze cell-based data using software tools (e.g., ImageJ, CellProfiler)
  • Maintain detailed lab records, manage sample inventories, and contribute to data integrity initiatives
  • Work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary research environment

NYU offers excellent benefits. Join our dynamic team at NYU and contribute to the development of groundbreaking technologies that are transforming early disease detection and precision diagnostics.
In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $55,000 - $65,000. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the specific grant funding and the terms of the research grant when extending an offer.
Qualifications
Required:
  • B.S. or M.S. degree in a life science or engineering discipline (e.g., Biology, Biochemistry, Bioengineering, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering)
  • Strong hands-on experience in experimental design and laboratory research
  • Direct experience with cytology techniques, including cell staining, sample preparation, and imaging
  • Familiarity with image analysis software for cell-based data quantification
  • Strong technical writing skills to prepare study protocols, test plans, and reports
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team

Preferred:
  • Experience handling human clinical samples under biosafety guidelines
  • Experience with microfluidics or single-cell analysis platforms
  • Knowledge of AI/machine learning concepts related to biomedical data (a plus, but not required)

Application Instructions
Applicants must submit:
  • A current CV or resume
  • A cover letter highlighting your interest in the role and relevant experience
  • A list of at least three professional references (highly recommended)
