WORK LOCATION: GBRA Laboratory/ Seguin, TX
SUMMARY:
This position is responsible for receiving and registering customer samples, communicating with customers and laboratory staff, and ensuring all customer, operational, and quality requirements are met. Strong customer service skills and the ability to adapt and respond to customer needs are essential. This position strongly benefits from a basic knowledge of chemistry and experience in a laboratory setting.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
TECHNICIAN I
• Receive customer samples in accordance with laboratory sample acceptance procedures. Samples may include drinking water, surface water, wastewater, and soil or sludge matrices.
• Enter sample data into a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) database, label samples with unique identifiers, and store them in designated areas.
• Address customer requests or inquiries as necessary.
• Preserve sample bottles with suitable chemicals, such as acids, bases, or salts, following laboratory procedures.
• Provide courier service by picking up customer samples at designated locations.
• Assist with shipping or delivering samples to subcontracted laboratories.
• Conduct assigned analyses, such as microbiology testing when required. Weekend work may be required.
• Manage general laboratory consumable inventory, order supplies and chemicals, and maintain associated records.
• Code and track invoices for purchases and credit card expenses.
• Process customer payments.
• Assist the Laboratory Administrator with archiving, filing, and other administrative duties.
• Perform additional duties as assigned such as, but not limited to, coordinating customer services, testing kit requests, monitoring the customer service line, overseeing billing, customer invoicing, aged reports, and assisting with Seguin campus reception duties.
TECHNICIAN II
• Fulfill all essential duties and responsibilities of the Sample Receipt Technician I.
• Manage and respond to customer complaints and feedback submissions.
• Coordinate customer sampling services and testing kit requests.
• Represent the laboratory at public outreach opportunities, such as conference booths, lab tours, and community and school events.
• Assume lead duties of answering the customer service phone line, Billing, customer invoicing, aged reports, subcontracting coordination, and Seguin campus reception duties.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES
• Understanding of introductory chemistry, acids, and bases.

• Must be able to interpret and accurately follow written standard operating procedures.
• Must be familiar with the latest editions of the following:
  • Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater.
  • Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Methods for Chemical Analysis of Water and Wastes.
  • Texas Commission on Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Conference (NELAC) Institute (TNI) Standard.

• Must be familiar with the following regulations:
  • Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) guidelines.
  • EPA 40 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Clean Water Act, Drinking Water Act and Guidelines Establishing Test Procedures for the Analysis of Pollutants.
  • Texas Administrative Code (TAC) Title 30 Environmental Quality.
  • The National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program (NELAP).

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATIONS
TECHNICIAN I
Bachelor of Science degree in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, medical technology or any discipline deemed acceptable by management is preferred but not required.
TECHNICIAN II
Bachelor of Science degree in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, medical technology or any discipline deemed acceptable by management.
EXPERIENCE
TECHNICIAN I
No prior experience in a professional laboratory is necessary. Must have a general working knowledge of computer programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel and Access.
TECHNICIAN II
Must have at least three years of experience in a professional TNI laboratory, with preferably two of those years at the GBRA Laboratory. Must have a general working knowledge of computer programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel and Access and be familiar with use of LIMS.
MANAGERIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
None.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Standard physical activity such as periodic standing, walking, sitting, and basic motor skills to operate necessary computer programs. Stamina for standing for long periods of time at work benches. Physical strength to lift forty-five pounds overhead. Wear personal protective equipment which may include a full-face respirator.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The majority of the work is performed in climate controlled, well-lit conditions. Some field work may be required. Weekend hours may be occasionally required. When in the field, employees must wear protective footwear in compliance with ANSI or ASTM standard. New employees are provided footwear in compliance with ANSI or ASTM standard. Replacement footwear is provided annually for qualifying employees.
TRAVEL
Overnight travel to professional seminars and operating divisions of the GBRA is occasionally required.
