PRN Clinical Nurse (clinical research trials)

Assists in conducting clinical research trials by performing research and clinical duties under the guidance and supervision of the Principal Investigator (PI). Provides patient care within the scope of nursing practice and in compliance with guidelines set by governing agencies. The position may vary according to the specific research project and is schedule based on participant enrollment and study protocol requirements.

This position may require access to and administration of medications within the scope of nursing practice and according to state law. It is patient‑sensitive and requires completion of all vaccination requirements or the approval for an exemption before the first day of work, in accordance with CDC standards and hospital policy.

Applicants must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in this description.

Responsibilities
  • Assess and ensure subject safety during study visits.
  • Ensure compliance and attention to detail for each study protocol.
  • Perform clinical tasks such as vitals, venipuncture, sample processing, oral glucose tolerance tests, blood glucose monitoring, peripheral IV catheter insertion, management, and removal.
  • Work with a variety of patient populations including young healthy individuals, older adults, individuals with obesity, and those with metabolic disease.
  • Propose and negotiate protocol alternatives when needed and document alternatives thoroughly.
  • Review study visit‑related data to assure compliance with the study protocol.
  • Evaluate adverse events (AE), intervene when necessary, and report details to the PI. Conduct follow‑up to determine resolution of AE and report serious AEs to the IRB and sponsor when required.
  • Mentor and train new and subordinate employees as needed.
  • Assist in the storage and organization of study samples.
  • Assist in appropriate maintenance and calibration of equipment.
  • Perform bedside care as required.

  • Demonstrated leadership, human relations, and effective communication skills.
  • Ability to function during regularly scheduled, 12‑hour, extended or alternative shifts.
  • Ability to display mental and emotional stamina in situations dealing with death, multiple patients, family members, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to function calmly and competently in high‑stress situations.
  • Ability to deal with hazards involved in assessing and providing care to patients.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the principles of life‑span growth and development and the ability to assess data regarding the patient’s status and provide care as described in the department’s policies and procedures manual.
Work Environment
  • Nearly continuously: Clinical research environment.
  • Often: Exposure to infectious disease, oil or other hazardous substances, and physical conditions such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, or chemical exposure.
Physical Requirements

  • Often: Repetitive hand motion (e.g., typing), walking, standing, sitting.
  • Seldom: Bending, reaching overhead.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Required: Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system, obtained within 30 days of hire.
  • Required: Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Utah, or obtain one within 90 days of hire under the interstate compact if switching residency to Utah.
  • Preferred: Additional certifications such as Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), or Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) within one year of hire.
  • Immunization against vaccine‑preventable diseases in accordance with CDC standards and hospital policy.
