What is a Samaritan?

Samaritans are volunteers who provide emotional support to people in distress or at risk of suicide. They listen without judgment, offer empathy, and help individuals talk through their feelings, often via telephone, email, or in-person conversations. The role does not involve giving advice or direct intervention but focuses on compassionate listening and helping callers feel heard and understood. Samaritans are trained to maintain confidentiality and respect the privacy of those they support.

What are some common challenges faced by Samaritans in their daily responsibilities?

Samaritans often encounter emotionally challenging situations as they support individuals in crisis or distress. Managing emotional boundaries while offering empathetic listening can be demanding but is essential to maintaining personal well-being. Team debriefings and supervision are typically in place to help Samaritans process difficult conversations. Additionally, adapting communication styles to meet each caller's unique needs requires flexibility and strong interpersonal skills.
