What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a salvage adjuster, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Salvage Adjuster, you need strong analytical skills, knowledge of insurance policies, and experience in asset valuation, often supported by a relevant degree or prior claims adjusting experience. Familiarity with claims management software, salvage auction platforms, and relevant certifications such as those from the Insurance Institute are typically used in this role. Outstanding negotiation, problem-solving, and communication skills help Salvage Adjusters resolve claims efficiently and liaise with clients and vendors. These abilities are crucial for maximizing recovery values, minimizing losses, and ensuring fair and accurate claims settlement.

How does a salvage adjuster typically collaborate with insurance companies and repair shops during the claims process?

A Salvage Adjuster works closely with insurance companies to evaluate the value and condition of damaged property, such as vehicles, after a claim is filed. They coordinate with repair shops to obtain repair estimates, assess whether an item should be repaired or declared a total loss, and determine the salvage value. Effective communication and negotiation skills are essential, as the adjuster often serves as the liaison between insurers, repair facilities, and sometimes claimants, ensuring the process is handled efficiently and fairly. This collaborative approach helps streamline claims resolution and maximizes recovery for the insurer.

What is the difference between Salvage Adjuster vs Insurance Claims Adjuster?

Work EnvironmentFieldwork inspecting damaged property, salvage sitesOffice and fieldwork assessing insurance claims

While both roles involve assessing property damage, a Salvage Adjuster specializes in evaluating salvageable property after a loss, often working directly at salvage sites. An Insurance Claims Adjuster handles broader insurance claims, including damage assessment and settlement, typically working in offices or on-site. Both require licensing and industry-specific knowledge, but their focus and work environments differ.

What is a salvage adjuster?

Salvage adjusters are insurance professionals who assess damaged property—such as vehicles, boats, or equipment—to determine its residual value after a loss. Their primary responsibility is to evaluate the extent of damage, estimate the salvage value, and help facilitate the recovery or sale of salvageable items. Salvage adjusters often work closely with insurance companies, claimants, and salvage buyers to maximize recovery from damaged assets. They play a critical role in minimizing losses for insurers and ensuring fair settlements for policyholders.

Job description

About Reserv
Reserv is an insurtech creating and incubating cutting-edge AI and automation technology to bring efficiency and simplicity to claims. Founded by insurtech veterans with deep experience in SaaS and digital claims, Reserv is venture-backed by Bain Capital and Altai Ventures and began operations in May 2022. We are focused on automating highly manual tasks to tackle long-standing problems in claims and set a new standard for TPAs, insurance technology providers, and adjusters alike.
We have ambitious (but attainable!) goals and need people who can work in an evolving environment. If building a leading TPA and the prospect of tackling the long-standing challenges of the claims role sounds exciting, we can't wait to meet you.
About the role
We are seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented Trucking Total Loss Adjuster to join our Transportation Claims team. In this role, you'll specialize in managing total loss claims for heavy-duty and commercial vehicles, working directly with fleet managers, repair shops, salvage yards, independent adjusters, and valuation vendors to expedite accurate and fair settlements. You'll be responsible for reviewing damage appraisals and determining when units are economically impractical to repair, coordinating salvage disposition, and verifying total loss valuations based on vehicle specs, condition, mileage, and configuration.
Your day-to-day will involve overseeing an active inventory of trucking claims, prioritizing critical cases, and ensuring timely communication with insureds, claimants, and partners across the logistics and transportation space. You'll also be expected to analyze downtime and loss-of-use exposures and manage rental and replacement vehicle considerations when applicable.
What you'll do
  • Provide prompt, courteous, and high-quality customer service to all policyholders and claimants by answering customer calls and resolving customer requests
  • Gather necessary information from customers, fleet contacts, and third-party operators to successfully adjudicate the claim and explain policy, coverage, and appropriate course of action
  • Manage an inventory of commercial auto and trucking claims, establish initial reserves for all potential exposures (including physical damage, loss-of-use, and cargo when applicable), and adjust as appropriate throughout the claim
  • Coordinate with salvage vendors and transportation providers for the timely pickup and movement of damaged units, and assist with downtime or rental reimbursement as applicable
  • Recognize recovery opportunities related to subrogation, salvage, and total loss situations, particularly in multi-vehicle commercial incidents
  • Ensure compliance with specific state regulations, motor carrier filings, policy provisions, and internal standard operating procedures
  • Negotiate and communicate all total loss settlements per company and state guidelines within approved payment authority, with special attention to commercial vehicle specs, equipment add-ons, and lienholder requirements
  • Provide input for continuous development of claims guidelines, best practices, and process improvements specific to the trucking and logistics sector
  • Oversee and direct outside investigative service providers (e.g., independent adjusters, appraisers, and engineers), and work closely with the client, client counsel, and investigative services to resolve the claim
  • Engage in learning opportunities to build knowledge of commercial auto claims, fleet risk exposures, regulatory trends, legal precedents impacting transportation claims, and policy updates

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree (lack of one should not stop you from applying if you possess all the other qualifications)
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience on point and concentrated in transportation claims adjusting, ideally with:
    • Total Loss adjusting experience
    • Large commercial vehicles (Trucks, busses, fleet vehicles)
    • Third-party Property Damage Liability
  • Have an active adjuster license in your home state or designated home state (if your state does not offer one) and be willing to obtain all required licenses within 60 days
  • Knowledge of state regulations, policy provisions, and standard operating procedures
  • Commercial experience preferred
  • Ability to analyze and evaluate complex data and make sound decisions based on established guidelines, policies, and procedures
  • Curious and motivated by problem solving and questioning the status quo
  • Desire to engage in learning opportunities and continuous professional development
  • Willingness to travel for client and claims needs

Benefits
  • Generous health-insurance package with nationwide coverage, vision, & dental
  • 401(k) retirement plan with employer matching
  • Competitive PTO policy - we want our employees fresh, healthy, happy, and energized!
  • Generous family leave policy after 8 months of continuous work
  • Work from anywhere to facilitate your work life balance
  • Apple laptop, large second monitor, and other quality-of-life equipment you may want. Technology is something that should make your life easier, not harder!

Additionally, we will
  • Listen to your feedback to enhance and improve upon the long-standing challenges of an adjuster and the claims role
  • Work toward reducing and eliminating all the administrative work from an adjuster role
  • Foster a culture of empathy, transparency, and empowerment in a remote-first environment
