Job description

American Public Media is a non-profit, public media organization serving a national radio audience of 19 million and a digital audience of 2 million, which includes over 200,000 donors. We are headquartered in St. Paul, Minnesota but serve operations in Southern California, New York and elsewhere.
Position Summary:
We are seeking a talented Salesforce Architect and hands-on technical leader to join our team and play a key role in the development, technical direction, customization, and ongoing optimization of Salesforce solutions across our CRM ecosystem. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of Salesforce architecture, development best practices, platform governance, and excellent problem-solving skills. This is an excellent career opportunity for a resourceful and creative person to have a major impact on our mission driven non-profit organization. This tech-savvy individual will collaborate with other members of IT and user departments such as membership, member audience services, underwriting, major giving, marketing and digital to gather and translate complex business requirements into scalable Salesforce solutions while providing technical leadership, knowledge sharing, and implementation best practices with colleagues.
The desired candidate will have demonstrated success in working with technology staff and business users in support of the development, deployment and maintenance of custom Salesforce solutions. This role will be responsible for establishing technical standards, guiding technical design approaches and implementation best practices, and ensuring our Salesforce ecosystem supports both current needs and future growth.
Expected Compensation Range: $140,000 - $158,000 per year. The exact salary rate is determined by experience and education related to the role, organizational compensation structure, and internal equity.

Position Responsibility:
  • Lead collaboration with stakeholders to analyze business processes, gather and document requirements, and translate them into strategic technical solutions.
  • Design, develop, and deploy custom Salesforce solutions to meet business requirements while establishing architectural standards and best practices.
  • Develop Salesforce solutions using declarative and programmatic approaches, including custom objects, fields, flows, Apex, Visualforce pages, Lightning Components, and other custom functionalities as needed.
  • Integrate Salesforce with third-party systems using REST/SOAP APIs and other integration tools.
  • Perform thorough unit testing, debugging, validation, and code reviews to ensure Salesforce solutions function as expected and meet established code quality standards prior to implementation.
  • Guide team members in following established development patterns and Salesforce best practices.
  • Help define and evolve practical testing, deployment, and release management processes to support reliable and scalable Salesforce delivery.

  • Perform data analysis and validation activities to ensure Salesforce solutions and data changes meet functional, operational, and reporting expectations.
  • Maintain and support existing Salesforce implementations, including troubleshooting issues and implementing enhancements while evaluating platform optimization opportunities.
  • Stay updated on Salesforce releases, new features, and industry best practices to continuously improve our Salesforce solutions and provide technical direction for platform evolution.
  • Work collaboratively with other members of the IT Business Application Support team to share workload, support delivery goals, and provide technical leadership for Salesforce initiatives.
  • Provide technical leadership and guidance to Salesforce team members, including knowledge transfer and skill development.
  • Help with Salesforce Administration work as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent work experience; a degree in computer science, software engineering, information systems or a related technical discipline preferred.
  • Salesforce Architect (e.g., Salesforce Certified Application Architect, Salesforce Certificed System Architect) and Developer certifications (e.g., Salesforce Certified Platform Developer I/II) are highly preferred.
  • Proven experience leading and developing custom solutions on the Salesforce platform, including Apex, Visualforce, Lightning Components, and declarative configuration.
  • Experience with Salesforce integration using REST/SOAP APIs, Apex REST services, and other integration tools (e.g., Azure Data Platform pipelines).
  • Experience in people management, leadership development, and/or mentorship of technical teams.
  • Five-plus years of information technology experience, preferably in software development with demonstrated progression to technical leadership roles.
  • Experience mentoring development teams and establishing technical standards and governance frameworks.
  • Proven track record of leading Salesforce platform strategy and architecture decisions in enterprise environments.

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:
  • Strong technical skills (including Apex, Visualforce, Lightning, Salesforce API, SOQL, Salesforce Data Model, Salesforce Administration, Integration, Testing and Debugging, deployment tools, security best practices).
  • Strong understanding of Salesforce data model, security model, and governor limits.
  • Familiarity with source control tools and continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) processes.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams and stakeholders.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment while providing leadership and direction to team members.

Preferred Skills and Experience:
  • Experience with Salesforce NPSP a strong plus.
  • Experience with structured query language (SQL).
  • Experience with Salesforce Accounting Subledger a big plus.
  • SCRUM process experience a plus.
  • Experience with integration with automated marketing systems.
  • Familiarity with Salesforce Marketing Cloud and its integration with Salesforce Sales Cloud a plus.
  • Experience with nonprofit organizations a plus.
  • Experience with enterprise-level solution architecture and design patterns for complex Salesforce implementations.
