What is sales tax filing?

Sales tax filing is the process by which businesses report and remit sales tax collected from customers to the appropriate state or local tax authorities. It typically involves preparing and submitting sales tax returns on a monthly, quarterly, or annual basis, depending on the jurisdiction and the amount of sales. Accurate sales tax filing is essential to comply with tax laws, avoid penalties, and ensure proper financial record-keeping. Businesses must keep track of taxable sales, exemptions, and the correct tax rates for each location where they operate.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in sales tax filing?

To thrive in Sales Tax Filing, you need strong attention to detail, knowledge of state and local tax regulations, and a background in accounting or finance. Familiarity with tax preparation software, spreadsheets, and compliance management systems is essential, and certifications such as CPA or CMI can be advantageous. Excellent organizational skills, time management, and clear communication help ensure accurate filings and effective collaboration with clients or internal teams. These skills are critical for maintaining compliance, minimizing errors, and avoiding costly penalties for businesses.

What are some common challenges faced in a sales tax filing role, and how can they be managed effectively?

A common challenge in Sales Tax Filing is staying updated with frequently changing tax rates and regulations across different jurisdictions. Managing filing deadlines for multiple states or localities can also be complex, especially for businesses operating in several regions. Effective organization, leveraging reliable tax software, and maintaining clear communication with accounting and finance teams are crucial strategies to manage these challenges. Regular training and staying connected with tax authorities’ updates can further ensure accuracy and compliance.

Job description

About NumeralHQ

Numeral is building the automation backbone for internet commerce — starting with the painful world of sales tax compliance. We handle everything from registration to remittance, delivering a white-glove service so e-commerce businesses can stay laser-focused on what they do best: growing their products, customers, and teams.

We’re one of the fastest-growing companies from Y Combinator’s W23 batch, backed by top-tier investors including Benchmark Capital. Our team has deep roots from the early days at Stripe, Airbnb, Notion, and other breakout companies — and now we’re bringing that same level of craft, speed, and ambition to a space that’s long overdue for reinvention.

Numeral is small but mighty. Growth is already borderline unmanageable — which means every hire we make now will directly shape the trajectory of the company. If you’re excited about joining as an early team member and want the kind of ownership that defines careers, we want to meet you.

Mission

Running an online business today means wearing a thousand hats — most of them not the reason founders started their company. Our mission is to eliminate the administrative and accounting burdens that distract businesses from doing what they love.

We’ve already helped hundreds of merchants avoid the headache of building giant finance teams just to manage tax compliance. Tomorrow, we’re scaling that impact even further: building the automation layer that lets internet businesses stay nimble, compliant, and future-proof.

About the role:

We are hiring an International Tax Filing Manager to help define, scale, and operationalize Numeral’s global tax filing capabilities. This role is not responsible for preparing or submitting tax returns. Instead, you will:

  • Identify and document tax filing requirements

  • Translate tax rules into system and workflow requirements

  • Triage complex or non-standard filing issues

  • Partner closely with Product, Engineering, Filings, and Sales to build scalable solutions

This is a tax + systems + problem-solving role, ideal for someone who enjoys building structure and clarity in complex regulatory environments.

What You’ll Do

Tax Requirements & Coverage

  • Identify and document registration, transfer and filing requirements across U.S. and international jurisdictions for indirect tax.

  • Define deadlines, formats, data dependencies, validations, and exceptions needed to support compliant filings.

  • Maintain and evolve internal requirements documentation as regulations change and coverage expands.

Issue Triage & Escalation

  • Act as an escalation point for complex or edge-case filing scenarios.

  • Diagnose issues raised by Operating Teams, Product, or Sales and determine appropriate resolution paths.

  • Coordinate with internal teams and external advisors when clarification or validation is required.

Product & Engineering Collaboration

  • Work closely with Product and Engineering to design and improve filing workflows and automation.

  • Translate tax requirements into clear inputs for system logic, data models, and product features.

  • Review and test new filing capabilities from a tax-requirements perspective.

Sales & Customer Enablement

  • Support Sales and Implementation teams by clarifying international filing scope, requirements, and limitations.

  • Help distinguish standard vs non-standard filing scenarios and inform customer expectations.

Scaling & Process Improvement

  • Identify gaps, risks, and inefficiencies in current filing coverage and workflows.

  • Propose scalable, system-driven solutions that reduce manual intervention as Numeral grows globally.

Qualifications

Must-Have:

  • 5+ years of experience in (indirect) tax compliance, tax operations, or tax advisory with U.S. and international exposure.

  • Strong understanding of tax filing requirements across multiple jurisdictions (hands‑on return prep not required).

  • Demonstrated ability to translate tax rules into operational or technical requirements.

  • Experience working cross‑functionally with product, engineering, or operations teams.

  • Comfortable operating in ambiguity and building structure from incomplete information.

Nice to Have:

  • Experience in SaaS, fintech, or other technology‑driven environments.

  • Background in tax automation, systems design, or workflow tooling.

  • Familiarity working with external tax advisors or local country specialists.

What success looks like
  • Filing requirements are clearly defined, documented, and executable at scale.

  • Complex filing issues are resolved efficiently with minimal disruption.

  • Product decisions are informed by accurate, forward‑looking tax requirements.

  • International filing coverage expands without reliance on ad‑hoc or manual processes.

  • Bespoke or novel client requests and concerns are addressed quickly and with conviction.

Why Join Us?
  • Be a core builder in an ambitious, globally minded startup.

  • Learn hands‑on how to scale international compliance systems.

  • Work across functions and with leadership early in your career.

  • Make a visible impact immediately through enablement and operational design.

  • Enjoy a flexible, remote‑first culture.
